Scarce ©1839 Mitchell Map №6 New England  or  Eastern States:  ME,VT, NH, MA ,CT, RI Maine's Boundary Dispute The precise boundary line between Maine and New Brunswick remained a matter of often-heated argument between the United States and Britain for years after the close of the Revolutionary War. The dispute festered and smoldered until 1839, when it threatened to erupt into open warfare. The border was established through decades of negotiation between the American and the British governments, including arbitration by the King of the Netherlands from 1829 to 1831.  William, King of the Netherlands, was chosen by the United States and Great Britain to decide the dispute. The US, upon the urging of Maine, rejected his compromise line. These negotiations began after the American Revolution and culminated with the Aroostook War of 1838-39. Aroostook War, (1838–39), was a bloodless conflict over the disputed boundary between the U.S. state of Maine and the British Canadian province of New Brunswick. The peace treaty of 1783 ending the American Revolution had left unclear the location of a supposed “highlands,” or watershed, dividing the two areas The Webster–Ashburton Treaty of 1842 established the final boundary between the countries, giving most of the disputed area to Maine while preserving an overland connection between Lower Canada and the Maritime colonies. This treaty awarded 7,015 square miles to the United States and 5,012 square miles. The British retained the northern area of the disputed territory, including the Halifax Road with its year-round overland military communications between Quebec and Nova Scotia The map shows Maines boundaries:
  • According to the Treaty of Paris which was signed by U.S. and British Representatives on September 3, 1783, ending the War of the American Revolution.
  • Proposed by the King of the Netherlands in 1831
  • Claimed by Great Britain until 1842
  • The line of 1842 (The Webster–Ashburton Treaty)
Other features are two quaint depictions of sailing ships: Steam Ship from  to Liverpool  Boston via Halifax &The Mayflower with the Pilgrims 1620 The map was taken from Mitchell School Atlas revised edition ©1839 (shown in the photo but not part of the sale) Though the map is also ©1839 it was common for 19th century publishers not to update their copyrights,  therefore this map actually dates to about 1843.
