Kokeshi are simple wooden Japanese dolls with no arms or legs that have been crafted for more than 150 years as a toy for children. Originally from the northeastern region of Japan, they are handmade from wood, having a simple torso and head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body often has floral and/or ring designs painted in red, black, and sometimes green, purple, blue, or yellow inks, and covered with a layer of wax. One characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. Since the 1950s, kokeshi makers have signed their work, usually on the bottom and sometimes on the back. Kokeshi were first produced by kijishi, artisans proficient with a lathe, near Zaō, a town located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.  From there kokeshi-making techniques spread to other areas in the region. It is said that these dolls were originally made during the middle of the Edo period (1600–1868) to be sold to people who were visiting the hot springs in the north-east of the country. Traditional kokeshi dolls' shapes and patterns are particular to a certain area. The art of Sosaku (Creative) and modern Kokeshi doll making began in the early 1940s, grew and flourished in the 1950s-60s, and continued well into the 70s. After Japan gave access to Western ideas, many Creative Kokeshi artists wanted to honour the carving tradition, but did not want to follow traditional family designs. The images represented in Japanese Sosaku Kokeshi carving typically fall into one of three categories: iconic scenes, significant themes and motifs in history and literature, and objects in everyday life e.g. kimono, children and babies, seasonal grasses and flowers. Additionally, seasonal motifs and mythological subjects are carved and painted in a variety of methods on their bodies. While a number of these artisans did apprentice under Traditional masters, the Sosaku Kokeshi artists showed exciting variety and imagination. Many of them were created using more than one type of wood, with the various woods comprising the clothing and hair treatments; and with the application of different methods of carving, chiselling and wood-burning techniques - the dolls were a far different type of Kokeshi than their Traditional predecessors.
