Upgrade Seagate 1TB to 4TB Surveillance 3.5" HDD

Upgrade the standard bundled Seagate 1TB Hard Disk Drive to 4TB Surveillance Grade hard drive

(NOTE: This item is not for separate sale but rather is an add-on to a bundled DIY kit.)

Why add capacity?

Choose to upgrade your storage from 1TB to 2, 4 or 10 when you desire longer archive times. Archive total time is dependent on many complicated factors but as a guide note the following scenario examples:

  • 1TB storage with 4x 2MP cameras in operation
  • Cameras are using H.264 codec in medium quality compression mode
  • Cameras record on motion detection 9 hours per day on average
  • Cameras are set to record at 12 frames per second
    • 1TB total capacity will store 3.3 weeks footage
    • 4TB becomes 13.2 weeks storage
  • 1TB storage with 4x 2MP cameras in operation
  • Cameras are using H.264 codec in high quality compression mode
  • Cameras record on motion detection 9 hours per day on average
  • Cameras are set to record at 25 frames per second
    • 1TB total capacity will store 5.6 days footage
    • 4TB becomes 3.2 weeks storage
  • 1TB storage with 4x 2MP cameras in operation
  • Cameras are using H.264 codec in medium quality compression mode
  • Cameras record 24 hours per day
  • Cameras are set to record at 25 frames per second
    • 1TB total capacity will store 2.1 days footage
    • 4TB becomes 1.2 weeks storage
  • 1TB storage with 4x 2MP cameras in operation
  • Cameras are using H.265 codec in medium quality compression mode
  • Cameras record 24 hours per day
  • Cameras are set to record at 12 frames per second
    • 1TB total capacity will store 4.2 days footage
    • 4TB becomes 2.4 weeks storage

Increasing your camera count will reduce the above record archival times and increasing your storage size will increase your archival times.

Why choose "Surveillance" Grade?

The increasing Megapixel capacities of modern IP cameras is leading to a dramatic rise in storage requirements despite the use of the latest H.265 compression codec. For this reason all the latest generation Q-See NVRs support the latest generation Seagate Skyhawk 4 and 10TB surveillance grade storage drives. Store up to 32TB with 8x drives in the QT8716/32/64 recorders, 16TB with 4x drives in the brand new QT816 or simply replace the standard 1TB drive in the smaller QT874 and QT878 with a single 4TB for maximum storage archival times.

Seagate has been making drives specifically designed for CCTV surveillance for over ten years and the new Skyhawk range is designed for a workload rating of over 180TB per year with 1M hours MTBF and a 3 year limited manufacturers warranty.

This Seagate Skyhawk 4TB Surveillance drive is a great match for Perisale 8 and 16 Channel TVRs, the Q-See 8 channel NVRs such as the QT878 and the larger multiple drive recorders from Q-See such as the QT816, QT8732 and the QT8764 and this product code will allow you to upgrade the installed standard 1TB drive to the higher storage and high sustained write capacity 4TB Skyhawk Surveillance drive.

Choose a Seagate surveillance drive where high rates of write are required. As a guide these are some of the situation that we would recommend choosing Surveillance grade drives:

  • 8 cameras or more in 24hr permanent record mode 2MP or higher with 25fps and low compression
    • Up to 8 cameras 2MP in 12fps, medium compression it is ok to select Barracuda desktop grade drives.
  • 12 cameras or more in motion detect record mode 2MP or higher with 12 fps and any medium compression.
  • 17 cameras or more in all circumstances
    • A 16x 2MP cameras deployment in high compression and 7fps will operate with a single Barracuda Desktop drive
  • Multi Drive NVRs where three or more drives are required and will operate in RAID format
    • This is typically where 16, 32 and 64 2MP+ cameras are deployed at high frame per second rates.

The Seagate Barracuda range of Desktop Personal Hard Drives are ideally suited to single SATA disk DVR, TVR and NVRs only. They provide highly reliable storage with write speeds suitable for one to four cameras in permanent write (24hour recording) 25fps 2MP mode or up to eight cameras in motion detect record mode or 16 cameras with high compression and low frame rates.

For situations of high bandwidth, heavy sustained write requirements typically with larger megapixel and number of cameras we recommend the Seagate Surveillance range. The higher sustained write speed and additional support for the extended SATA commands for additional write modes will ensure all camera frames are recorded and no "image jumping" occurs at playback.
