Offered is a large antique travelling/shipping or carriage chest (n.b. the curved roof for roping it onto a carriage) It is made in England; out of oak; and it dates to the late 18th century Georgian period, circa 1800.
This is a superb large antique shipping chest with a sarcophagus shape – it has a beautiful dome-top chest with a superb finish.
It comes from our family from Albany, Western Australia, where our grandfather George William Stead (a descendent of early Albany settlers), was a Mayor of the town (1931-36).
· Displaying a desirable aged patina with a rich caramel and russet hues
· Made of oak
· The dome lid opens smoothly upon external iron strap hinges
· Dressed with a pair of large, pleasingly weathered iron drop handles to each side to ease transport and carrying
· Large antique lock within — key absent
· Dovetails joints
· A candle box rests at the top of the chest for easy access after a long journey
· Prominent plinth resides above a shaped apron to front and rear
· Rides on metal rollers set within the base
· The trunk’s generous height offers itself for grand voyages or practical storage within the household.
· It is extremely ROBUST with solid joints and construction.
