Scarce Karl Goetz medal commemorating airship Graf Zeppelin launch in 1928; Kienast medal reference #408. Rigid-frame Graf Zeppelin airship  (German designation LZ-127) was the famous “cigar blimp” designated for carrying passengers and cargo over long distances. One of the largest airships of the time, it had a crew of 36 men and could carry up to 24 passengers. Graf Zeppelin became the most recognized blimp of the time after she completed the first intercontinental flight in 1928 and first around-the-world flight in 1929. 
The medal is expertly done in the unique Karl Goetz  artistic style; the rim is marked “Bayer. Hauptmunzampt. Feinsilber ” (Bavarian Head Coinage Office. Fine Silver). About 19.4 grams; about 36 mm in diameter. Several scratches on obverse and a number of rim dings are noted for accuracy. Still, this is a scarce Goetz “airship type” is hard-to-find in any condition.

Now a bit about the artist: Karl Goetz was born in Augsburg, Germany and studied in Leipzig, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Utrecht, Le Locle (Switzerland), and in Paris. With the start of WW-I Karl Goetz became an artist known around the world for his 1914-1923 satirical medals. He also designed a series of pattern coins, tokens and medals for the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich Germany. Karl Goetz survived WW2 and died in his native Munich in 1950.  Overall, Goetz created about 180 satirical medals and close to 800 medals overall; all are very collectible and highly prized today.
