LUCAS COUNTY, OHIO

Early days in Lucas County and its various communities -- Toledo, Maumee City, Sylvania and Whitehouse -- are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 51 Page Booklet, reprinted from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio, The Ohio Guide (a WPA Writers Project), and other hard-to-fine sources. The spiral-bound booklet is printed on quality paper with the fine print enlarged for easier reading. A sheet of clear vinyl has been added to protect the front cover.

Illustrations include the Harbor of Toledo (shown below), a wonderful sketch of the Pioneer Railroad of the West, and an 1846 drawing of Maumee City from Fort Meigs.

Among the many and diverse topics discussed are: "The Battle of Fallen Timbers" in 1794; the Development of Toledo; the Ohio and Michigan War; the life of pioneer Peter Navarre; Uncle Pete Manor, a French trader; the Legend of Roche du Boeuf; the Great Drouth of 1838, the value to Ohio of the pioneer railroad, Chief Justice Morrison Remick Waite; and John S. Kountz, drummer boy of Mission Ridge.

GENEALOGY ENTHUSIASTS will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses, along with biographical information on Gen. James Barrett Steedman, Gen. John W. Fuller; Gen. Isaac R. Sherwood, Gen. Charles W. Hill; Gen. Charles L. Young; Jesse W. Scott, newsman; David Ross Locke; James M. Ashley; Clark Waggoner, writer; and Richard Mott.

The Howe history covers the development of this area until about 1890, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glimpse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. A 1933 look at newspapers in the county and maps showing the 88 Ohio counties and 1805 Ohio are included.
