SUPERB EXAMPLE OF JOHN PATRICK KELANTUMAMA TIWI ISLANDS POTTERY!

Proudly presenting an exquisite Australian Aboriginal studio pottery vase expertly handcrafted, beautifully decorated and signed by the Tiwi Islands potter, John Patrick Kelantumama in 1984. This perfectly proportioned vessel has been finished appealing earthy tones of mottled grey with a wide central oxide brown band beautifully decorated with inscribed Aboriginal designs. The sgrafitto pattern has a fabulous tribal feel featuring concentric circles separated with vertical cross hatched panels. The hand inscribed design removes the oxide glaze to reveal the natural clay below and adds an appealing textural element to this wonderfully tactile piece. This expertly potted piece is an absolute delight to hold and has an amazing feel. Being hand crafted, it is almost as if you can feel the potters hands that formed the clay into shape. SIZE: This impressive piece stands approx 120mms tall and measures 135mms in diameter at the flared top rim. CONDITION: This vessel is presented in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. This piece has been very well cared for presents spectacularly. MARKS: This piece is beautifully signed to the base the artists' brushed initials and date "JPK 84". THE ARTIST: John Patrick Kelantumama (1952-2015) joined the Tiwi Studio as an apprentice potter in 1976. He was John Bosco Tipiloura's nephew and had learnt bark carving and design from his father Patrick Kelantumama. He remained at Tiwi Design as its leading potter until ill health forced him to reduce his hours in 2011. He exhibited extensively in Australia and overseas and curated a number of Tiwi ceramic exhibitions. His work is represented in most major national collections.
