This art is signed by a three [3] times Fighter Ace!

This magnificent action-based Fearsome Foursome  [P-47 Thunderbolts] Artist Proof Print  Signed by Col. Herschel H. It is by one of the USA's most acclaimed aviation artists and is stunning in its colour and representation  of Capt.  Herschel H. Green   leading a flight of four P-47 Thunderbolts into a 2nd strafing run on a German Airfield launching Do. 217s; Macchi 202s and JU-52s.  37 enemy aircraft fell to the 317th / 325th Fighter Group that day.

Mike Machat is a master of capturing World Military Aviation events of significance.

The P-47 Thunderbolt Checkertails were the first group to down more than 100 enemy aircraft.  Col. Herschel Harper "Herky" Green was a World War II flying ace in the USAF and was the leading ace of the Fifteenth Air Force, shooting down 18 enemy aircraft and destroying 10 more on the ground.  Green flew in 1943 and 1944 in the North Africa and Italian campaigns with the 325th Fighter Group. By the end of 1944, he had flown 100 missions and received the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal with 25 Oak Leaf Clusters, Silver Star, and two Distinguished Flying Crosses.

Importantly, each Fearsome Foursome  [P-47 Thunderbolts] Artist Proof Print  is a 'historical art document in its own right’  magnificently countersigned   by the  Pilot Signed by Col. Herschel H. Green [317th Fighter Squadron / 325th Fighter Group] and Mike Machat

Fearsome Foursome  [P-47 Thunderbolts] Artist Proof Print  Signed by Col. Herschel H. Green [317th Fighter Squadron / 325th Fighter Group] and Mike Machat

Mike Machat's artistic aircraft research included flight experiences in numerous 'exotic' aircraft types.  Mike has flown with NASA, the Blue Angels, and the USAF Test Pilot School, and was the first Air Force Artist to fly in the Rockwell B-1B Lancer and Grumman F-14 Tomcat in a U.S. Navy exchange program.  Mike Machat's Art sells incredibly quickly.

Here are a few words about this fine art stunning  Limited Edition Print   by Mike Machat:

"January 30, 1944 marked a significant moment in 15th Air Force History, as six heavy bomb groups and 60 P-47s successfully carried out major strikes on enemy targets into the VIllaoraba and Udine areas of Northern Italy.

The bombers took off first and set out on a high-altitude  mission, while the Thunderbolts launched out over the Adriatic Sea at such low altitude that their prop tips were kicking up ocean spray.

Their first target was a German Airfield launching aircraft Do. 217s; Macchi 202s and JU-52s as they tried to scramble back to their home base, but Col. Herschel H. Green and his wingmen, 2nd. Lt. George P. Novotny,; F/O Cecil O. Dean, and F/O Edsel Paulk prevented 15 from ever reaching safety.  Col. Herschel H. Green accounted for four enemy aircraft on the one mission. "

There were only 100 of  Fearsome Foursome  [P-47 Thunderbolts] Artist Proof Print  Signed by Col. Herschel H. Green [317th Fighter Squadron / 325th Fighter Group] and Mike Machat available for the Worldwide market, and each comes with its own Mike Machat signed Certificate of Authenticity [CoA].

The incredibly stunning  Fearsome Foursome  Artist Proof Print  captures all the vivid color and brilliance of the original Mike Machat work of art.

The ‘hallmark’ of a Master Aviation Artist is in their ability to illustrate many different angles of aircraft in flight in their artwork.  The exceptional construct of this art is how you are placed in the moment as the  sheer strength and power of the large P-47 Thunderbolt is illustrated in its element of ground attack, while amidst the danger of the surrounding flak as  Col. Herschel H. Green's flight of four aircraft undertake their 2nd low-level strafing run.  The action depicted in this art is stunning.

This portrait of the  Fearsome Foursome  [P-47 Thunderbolts] Artist Proof Print  captures all the vivid color, brilliance and true Life action of the original Mike Machat work of art.

Fearsome Foursome  [P-47 Thunderbolts] Artist Proof Print  Signed by Col. Herschel H. Green [317th Fighter Squadron / 325th Fighter Group] and Mike Machat  is an important signed historical art piece  for any collection.  It is a unique record of the aggressive push north through Italy as the Allies begin to create the 'pincer' movement that, along with the invasion of France would ultimately end World War Two.

Mission Profile   (source Wikipedia)

Col. Herschel H. Green  (July 3, 1920 - August 16, 2006) was an 18 Victory Ace, the leading ace of the 325th Fighter Group [FG] and the 2nd highest scoring Ace in the 15th Air Force.

On January 8, 1943, the 325th FG set sail for North Africa aboard the USS Ranger (CV-4), and after taking off from the carrier, arrived at Cazes Aerodrome in Casablanca on January 19, 1943. Herschel Green flew his first combat mission on May 19, 1943, off the Italian coast, and shot down a BF-109. He was flying P-40 number 13, which was badly damaged, and the plane was later hauled away for scrap and spare parts. He was assigned to P-40 number 11, a number he kept and transferred to his P-47  and later P-51. A few days after his first combat mission on May 19, he was promoted to Captain. While flying the P-40, he shot down a total of three enemy aircraft.

In September, 1943, Captain Green transitioned to the P-47 Thunderbolt, and downed ten enemy fighters, including six on January 30, 1944. He was flying a P-47 that was assigned to Captain Bunn Hearn, Jr., as his P-47 number 11 was down for maintenance. Unaware that Captain HearnÍs P-47 was carrying 800 rounds of ammunition per gun instead of the standard 400 rounds the Group used, Captain Green broke off his attack after he began to see tracers from the guns, which normally signaled that each machine gun had 50 rounds remaining. Had he continued to fight with the remaining 3,200 plus rounds in the guns, his total enemy aircraft destroyed on the mission could have been much higher. On March 25, 1944, he became the Commanding Officer of the 317th Fighter Squadron, and in May, 1944, his squadron transitioned from the P-47 Thunderbolt to the P-51 Mustang. While flying the P-51, he shot down five enemy aircraft, and became an Ace in both the P-47 and P-51.

The 317th Fighter Squadron  was activated on 1 July 1942 at Theodore Green Airport, Providence, Rhode Island, as part of the 325th Fighter Group, the "Checker Tails".  After six months of intensive training in the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, the 317th embarked for North Africa aboard the USS Ranger (CV-4), in consort with its sister squadrons, the 318th and 319th. The 317th flew its first combat mission in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO) under Twelfth Air Force on 17 April 1943. Flying P-40 Warhawks, Republic P-47 Thunderbolts and North American P-51 Mustangs, the 317th fought in 13 separate campaigns where it earned two Distinguished Unit Citations in action over Italy and Sardinia. In October 1945, after the conclusion of the European air war, the 317th returned to the United States and was inactivated.

Collectors' Hints (Space and Aviation Firsts  © 2017-2023 ).

Collectors' Hint 1 - What is an 'Artist Proof'  Limited Edition Print?

'Artist Proofs'  are a special early subset of the regular limited edition, limited to the first 10% of the print run.  An ‘Artist Proof’  is just that, an ‘Artist Proof’  and may or may not be numbered at the discretion of the Artist.  They therefore usually sell for 20-50% more than the regular edition print.

The 'Artist Proofs'  are the first prints pulled off a fresh "stone", the plate which was drawn or etched by the artist  to create the Limited Edition Canvas Prints.

A really serious Collector usually prefers the 'Artists Proof'  if one is available, because of the extra value they represent.

A Limited Edition Print  is produced for very high quality and provides  ' Stand Out Impressiveness' upon your Wall.

Collectors Hint 2 - What is a 'Lithograph'  Limited Edition Print?

A  Lithograph is  a print created by running paper through a four-color press (red, yellow, blue, and black) making a full-color reproduction of an original painting in large quantities (usually 500-1,000).

If signed and numbered, it is a "Limited Edition" Print,  and all materials and plates used in making the print are destroyed to ensure that the edition will never be reproduced again.

Premium Art  -  Limited Edition Prints  utilising the Lithographic printing technique for very high quality provides  'Stand Out Impressiveness' upon your Wall.

Collectors Hint 3 - Acquisition of 'Rare' Historical Offerings!

I now try to obtain 'rare' offerings when they appear as I lost out on a few key Historical Pieces due to hesitating.

One was an X-15 photograph signed by 11 of the 12 surviving X-15 Pilots at the time, one being Neil Armstrong.  I have never seen a similar opportunity again during the past 25 years.  I suggest when an opportunity presents itself; please make the decision as to your collection focus and then act so you do not miss out!
