Circa mid-1800's (or slightly earlier), this scarce French antique rosary is made of blue opaline glass beads and steel beads. It is also connected by double-links made of brass metal. Opaline glass were made between 1810 and 1890 and was not made after that. The first opaline beads that were made were in vivid colours such as green, blue, yellow, black or lavender. My readings suggests that the opaque whites were made after that. Opaline glass also reach its peak of popularity in the 1850's-1860's during the reign of Napoleon III in France. This type of glass as we know also ended up in homewares such as vases, plates or chandeliers. It is said that true opaline glass was made in France. This rosary is also made of two metals, that of steel for the Pater beads, crucifix and the center medal. The creator chose to use brass metal links which kept the condition of this rosary in very good antique condition. Steel only became more available during the Industrial Revolution though it was used in small quantities in ancient times as it was very labour intensive. This rosary has been taken cared of by its previous owners. The glass beads still have the original lustre as if it was made yesterday. Having been taken cared of well in the past, this antique rosary has a very soft movement. All parts of this rosary are original. I have taken many pictures for you to appreciate this scarce beautiful rosary. Please study its details: Crucifix: is made of steel. The INRI symbol is pressed or etched to the metal. The corpus is soldered to the frame. This cross frame would have been casted and filed just like the other expensive metal. We have to remember that although we see the abundance of steel today, this rosary in its time, would have been composed of new materials produced as in opaline beads, while steel metal is also a metal that is now more available. There is a negligible slight corrosion at the reverse side of the crucifix. Size: 40mm x 26mm Links: are made of brass metal. All links are original and are in very good antique condition. There is soft movement throughout the whole rosary to aid in your prayers.  Beads:  Mater beads: are made of round antique blue opaline beads. They are opaque. The original lustre of the beads are superb. It is a trait of these old beads. Size: 6-7mm Pater beads: are made of round steel beads. They have been made by making a small ball and are soldered on one side. These steel beads have retained its condition very well, there are no corrosion on the beads. Size: 7mm Center Medal: is also made of steel. The center medal is etched or carved with the image of the Virgin Mother and of Jesus on the other side.
