The Doulton factory was founded in 1815 in Lambeth, South London by John Doulton (1793-1873) Doulton produced decorative & everyday items in stoneware, such as bottles and sewer pipes. In 1835 John's son Henry (1820 - 1897) joined and expanded including laboratory items, these drain pipes & sanitary ware were sold worldwide. By the mid 1850s John Doulton experimented with decorative pottery. He developed many different glazes with highly decorative effects, including faience, silicon, impasto, marqueterie, carrara, chine, and rouge flambe. The famous salt-glazed wares with blue decoration first appeared in 1862. Henry Doulton died in 1897 and Henry's son Henry Lewis Doulton took control. The Doulton factory was granted the Royal Warrant by Edward VII in 1901 and became known as Royal Doulton. Production continued at the Lambeth factory until 1956, after which Doulton concentrated on their activities at Burslem.
In 1968 Royal Doulton purchased Minton China (founded 1793) and Dunn Bennett (founded 1876). Followed by purchase of Webb Corbett and Beswick in 1969. In 1972 Pearson PLC purchased Doulton. Pearson combined the 2 tableware groups under the Royal Doulton Tableware name, but in 1993 Pearson returned the Doulton group to public ownership, it was listed on the London Stock Exchange. The company made further acquisitions in the 1990s but sales were slow and in 1997 the company was forced to restructure, cutting its workforce and products. Losses continued despite further attempts to cut costs. The iconic Nile Street Burslem factory closed in 2005, the company went administration in 2009. It is now part of WWRD Holdings Ltd. An acronym for the main companies of the business which are: Waterford, Wedgwood and Royal Doulton.
