The Builders
A Story & Study of Masonry
By Joseph Fort Newton, Litt. D.
This book is divided into three parts, as everything Masonic should be: Prophecy, History, and Interpretation.
The first part has to do with the hints and foregleams of Masonry in the early history, tradition, mythology, and symbolism of the race—finding its foundations in the nature and need of man, and showing how the stones wrought out by time and struggle were brought from afar to the making of Masonry as we know it.
The second part is a story of the order of builders through the centuries, from the building of the Temple of Solomon to the organization of the mother Grand Lodge of England, and the spread of the Order all over the civilized world.
The third part is a statement and exposition of the faith of Masonry, its philosophy, its religious meaning, its genius, and its ministry to the individual, and through the individual to society and the state. Such is a bare outline of the purpose, method, plan, and spirit of the work, and if these be kept in mind it is believed that it will tell its story and confide its message.

The Principles of Masonic Law
A Treatise on the Constitutional Laws, Usages & Landmarks of Freemasonry
By Albert G. Mackey
Albert Gallatin Mackey, was an American medical doctor, and is best known for his authorship of many books and articles about freemasonry, particularly Masonic Landmarks. He served as Grand Lecturer and Grand Secretary of The Grand Lodge of South Carolina; Secretary General of the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Rite for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States.
"In presenting to the fraternity a work on the Principles of Masonic Law, it is due to those for whom it is intended, that something should be said of the design with which it has been written, and of the plan on which it has been composed. It is not pretended to present to the craft an encyclopedia of jurisprudence, in which every question that can possibly arise, in the transactions of a Lodge, is decided with an especial reference to its particular circumstances."
"Were the accomplishment of such an herculean task possible, except after years of intense and unremitting labor, the unwieldy size of the book produced, and the heterogeneous nature of its contents, so far from inviting, would rather tend to distract attention, and the object of communicating a knowledge of the Principles of Masonic Law, would be lost in the tedious collation of precedents, arranged without scientific system, and enunciated without explanation."

Symbolism Of The Three Degrees
By OLIVER DAY STREET
Volume I: The Entered Apprentice Degree
Volume II: The Fellow Craft Degree
Volume III: The Master Mason Degree
In this 3-volume book, the author proceeds upon the principle, ignored by so many, that Masonic symbols should have a Masonic interpretation, as determined by the history and teaching of the Craft. This saves him the trouble, and his readers the weariness, of wandering through the mazes of ancient lore in quest of imaginary meanings of symbols to which the Craft has given, tacitly or officially, its own interpretation. The comparative study of symbols, to say nothing of their varied, meanings and migrations, is another subject, and is beyond the limits and purpose of this book.
The book will be welcomed by the Craft as a practical and competent elucidation of its symbolism, and it is an honor to the M.S.A. (Masonic Service Association) to give it a worthy and permanent form.

The Lights & Shadows of Freemasonry
Consisting of masonic tales, songs & sketches, never before published By Robert Morris
Robert Morris is remembered in Masonic circles as a founder of the Order of the Eastern Star, an auxiliary of the Masonic Order for women. He is also known as the Poet Laureate of Masonry, who reportedly wrote over 400 poems, many of them devoted to the Masons, their rituals, practices, and beliefs. He was one of the three most influential Masons of the 19th Century (others being Albert Mackey and Albert Pike).
The Lights & Shadows of Freemasonry was a classic in its day, long since out of print. Over 380 pages, it is a series of stories that explore the values of Freemasonry. Many Masonic leaders were influenced to join the Fraternity because of this book.

Tales of Masonic Life
By Robert Morris
To describe the practice of Masonry is an end that can scarcely fail to command the good wishes of all who love the Craft or the cause. To do it in language simple and easily understood secures a wider range of readers. To select illustrations of an everyday character will be most likely to awaken a spirit of emulation in the minds of readers. These three ideas form the key to this classic Masonic book, Tales of Masonic Life, originally published in 1860 and authored by Dr. Rob Morris, a Master Builder of the Order of the Eastern Star.

The Symbolism of Freemasonry
Illustrating and Explaining Its Science and Philosophy, its Legends, Myths and Symbols
by Albert G. Mackey
Originally published in 1869, this Masonic book is authored by Albert G. Mackey, an American medical doctor and a 33rd Degree Mason, who is best known for his authorship of many books and articles about freemasonry, particularly Masonic Landmarks. Mackey served as Grand Lecturer and Grand Secretary of The Grand Lodge of South Carolina; Secretary General of the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Rite for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States.
"Of the various modes of communicating instruction to the uninformed, the masonic student is particularly interested in two; namely, the instruction by legends and that by symbols. It is to these two, almost exclusively, that he is indebted for all that he knows, and for all that he can know, of the philosophic system which is taught in the institution. All its mysteries and its dogmas, which constitute its philosophy, are in trusted for communication to the neophyte, sometimes to one, sometimes to the other of these two methods of instruction, and sometimes to both of them combined. The Freemason has no way of reaching any of the esoteric teachings of the Order except through the medium of a legend or a symbol." - Excerpt from The Symbolism of Freemasonry
This classic book is an essential work for anyone serious about understanding Freemasonry.

The Ancient Mysteries & Modern Masonry
by Rev. Charles H. Vail
Originally published in 1909, this masonic book is authored by Rev. Charles H. Vail, a 32nd Degree Mason, who was, believe it or not, a preacher. He equates Hiram Abiff with Sun Worship!
From the Preface: "The Series of Sunday evening lectures which comprise this book were first given in Pullman Memorial Church, Albion, NY. The many calls for the lectures in printed form led to their publication. We trust that the book may contribute to a better understanding of the Order by the general public; inspiring our Brother Masons to greater appreciation of and loyalty to the Fraternity, and encouraging all to labor for the realization of the great principles and ideals embodied in the Ancient Mysteries and our Modern Masonry."
From the Introduction: "The purpose of these lectures is to consider the origin and nature of the Ancient Mysteries and Modern Masonry and to show the relation which they bear one to the other. Freemasonry deals largely with the morals and symbols of the Mysteries of Antiquity, and originally was one of the Channels of Ancient Wisdom."

Principles & Practice of
Masonic Jurisprudence
by John W. Simons
Originally published in 1869, authored by John W. Simons, a Past Grand Master of New York, this classic Masonic book is a must read on the topic of Masonic Jurisprudence.
From the Preface: "The lamentable want of knowledge, in regard to the simplest principles of Masonic Law, which prevails even among otherwise intelligent brethren, can only be fully known to those who, like the writer, have held official station in the Craft, and been called upon to answer the multitudinous questions that arise in the practice of lodges. A dozen different interrogatories are frequently propounded in relation to the same subject, all of which might be readily answered, were the questions in possession of the fundamental principle on which it is based. To supply this principle, and to simplify its application, has been the object in view in our work; and to it we have brought the experience of a long and active participation in every branch of our institution, with an extended intercourse with Craftsmen from every portion of our own country and Europe."

Theocratic Philosophy of Freemasonry in 12 Lectures
by Dr. G. Oliver
Theocratic Philosophy of Freemasonry is a term invented by Dr. G. Oliver, a well-known Masonic author of the 19th century, to indicate that view of Freemasonry which intimately connects its symbols with the teachings of pure religion, and traces them to the primeval revelations of God to man, so that the philosophy of Freemasonry shall develop the continual government of the Divine Being.
Dr. Oliver has developed this system in one of his works entitled Theocratic Philosophy of Freemasonry in 12 Lectures. He says: "It is the Theocracies Philosophy of Freemasonry that commands our unqualified esteem, and seals in our heart that love for the Institution which will produce an active religious faith and practice, and lead in the end to 'a building not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.' "
Many of the legendary speculations advanced in this work will be rejected at this day as unsound and untenable, but his views of the true philosophy of Freemasonry are worthy of profound study.
