Antique Hand-Hooked Rug with Red Roses and Other Colorful Flowers on a Light Gray Ground -Surrounded by an Unusual Fern and Scroll Pattern in Blue and Purple on a Rich Blue Ground, Hand Stitched Folk Art. It measures 55” X 36”.
This rug is striking and somewhat primitive in the best sense. It is probably from an original pattern. It is likely from before the 1950s in New England. It has a pretty dark blue background and is quite special.
It has a lovely center floral arrangement with two large shaded bright pink roses surrounded by green leaves and other flowers in purple, yellow, white, and blue. Also in the center are vines and green leaf sprays. The colors are bright and pretty and somewhat unusual.
This rug is not a more formal, practiced floral design like the Pearl McGown school that so influenced rug hooking in the ‘50s, ‘60s and beyond. It is quite unique.
This rug is in good condition for its age. It has some small pulls at the outer edge in a few places around the rug as shown in photos. The burlap binding at the back is worn and coming loose in a number of places (it could be easily replaced) but there are no holes or other damage. It is clean with no odor. Our household is nonsmoking and pet-free.
This rug would be pretty in a spot near a fireplace or in the kitchen or foyer. It has a country cottage feeling and as noted is more casual, formal and rustic than many hooked rugs of the day.
