Item:263255975660Pre-Columbian Chancay 'Very Large' Pottery Amphora . Pre-Columbiian, Chancay 'Very Large' Amphora Vessel. The Chancay were a Pre-Columbian Peruvian archaeological culture, native to the Central Coast region north of Lima, later becoming part of the Inca Empire. Ca. 800 to 1200 A.D. This large egg shaped, three tone polychrome pottery amphora vessel with anthropomorphic features of indeterminate sex, is striking for the curious and highly original way in which unusual shapes are merged with elementary decorations. This Amphora vessel is a good example of the earlier group of Chancay ceramics that is decorated predominately in the three colors of black and red on a pale or white slip. While the Chancay potter has taken care to show body parts in relief such as ears, nose, hands and feet, facial traits are merely sketched and painted decoration is used to complete physical features. The face has low relief eyes, nose and mouth and the body has painted arms and legs in relief, the arms converging at the belly and supporting a small beggar’s kero (a ceremonial beaker) . Though difficult to determine, these vessel figurines are thought to relate to a god thought to be associated with fertility rites. Dimensions: 43cm High x 22cm Wide. (16.93 x 8.66 inches) *Display stand not included.
