Historical

The publication of the States-General was one of the outstanding events of the beginning of May 1789. Foreign gazettes and unauthorized newspapers report the success of the subscription and the impact of Mirabeau's position on public opinion. The decree of the Council of May 6 prohibits all newspapers without permission, that of May 7 suppresses that of Mirabeau; they cause a protest of the assembly of the electors of the third state of Paris on the 8th (one will find the texts in HPLP, t. IV, p. 436-443). Mirabeau denounces them in his first Letter to his constituents, p. 3-9.
