  IM-10753: An original leaf from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours.  Fourteen lines of Latin gothic textura script in dark brown and red ink on animal vellum.   This leaf measures 180 x 125 mm (7 1/8 x 4 15/16”).

   

ONE ILLUMINATED TWO-LINE INITIAL AND TWO ILLUMINATED ONE-LINE INITIALS IN BURNISHED GOLD ON A RED AND BLUE GROUND WITH DELICATE WHITE TRACERY. DELICATE RINCEAUX BORDER IN BURNISHED GOLD, RED, PINK, GREEN AND BLUE.

 

This Book of Hours leaf was scribed in Northern France or French Flanders, c. 1450. This is an original, not a reproduction and its condition is excellent, as shown in the photos.

 

This leaf continues the Hour of the Cross - Hour of Sext.   The one-line illuminated ''D'' begins: ''Deus...'' (Incline unto my aid O God). The one-line illuminated ''H'' begins: ''To the cross Christ nailed was in the sixth hour of the day, And there hanging with two thieves reputed was as they: Thirsting by torments made with gall they seek to slake: mocked was the Lamb while he our guild on him did take). The two-line illuminated ''D'' begins the prayer: ''Domine...'' (O Lord Jesus Christ the son of the living God, set thy passion, cross, and death between thy judgment and my soul, now and in the hour of my death and vouchsafe to grand unto me grace and mercy...).
