Seller: minchell65 (568) 100%, Location: Toowoomba, QLD, Ships to: AU, Item: 254372811696 Large vintage brass lion's head door knocker with a substantial presence - 110mm x 170mm (4 1/4" x 6 1/2"); weighs approx. 800gm (28oz or 1.75lbs). The knocker strikes against the bottom brass plate, and therefore saves damage to the door. It is thought the earliest door knockers originated in Ancient Greece, where slaves whose job it was to greet the guests of the house were chained to a heavy ring attached to the main door by a plate. If the slave was asleep when the guest arrived, the guest would tap the knocker to alert the slave or the home owner. The lion head knocker with mouth gripping the the ring became especially popular in the early 19th Century, and it still remains a favourite today. It is particularly suited to older period homes. The lion head has been used symbolically to represent Great Britain by many cultures for centuries and is attributed to symbolise strength, pride, protection and power - thus a lion's head knocker symbolises the protector and defender of the home.
