Cathedral Fine Art"The Triumph of Britannia"by Henri-Louis Dupray (French 1841 - 1909)signed oil painting on canvas, framedcanvas: 40 x 32 inchesframed: 42.5 x 35 inchesVery fine 19th century oil painting on canvas, depicting the allegorical depiction referred to as The Triumph of Britannia. The scene depicts various military British soldiers in the field, with horses and canons. A mounted soldier holds the Union Jack flag aloft as they face Neptune riding the Chariot of Britannia. It is a monumental work, painted on this very large scale and capturing fascinating and wonderful details - superbly painted. It is one of the finest and largest of his works we have seen. The painting is by the French artist, Henri-Louis Dupray (1841-1909) who specialised in military paintings; with his work now in public collections worldwide. Henri Louis Dupray had initially sought a career in the military, but had to end it in 1859 after a riding accident. His interest in art developed through technical drawing and he began to take lessons from the painters Léon Cogniet and Isidore Pils. Already at the beginning of his artistic career Dupray specialized in the detailed representation of military subjects, only occasionally he devoted himself to portraiture. From 1863 he exhibited regularly in the Salon de Paris and in 1865 he became a member of the Artists Association of the Société des Aquafortistes . The painter Édouard Manet belonged to his circle of friends. In Dupray's work initially predominated scenes of the French Revolution and motifs from the wars during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte , after 1870 were increasingly motifs from the German-French War added. In 1878 he was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor.Condition report:The painting is in very good and presentable condition. There are two faults which prevent it being perfect...the upper left near the Union Jack has been repaired and retouched (patch verso)...and our other comment would be that the stretcher frame has indented the canvas from behind, in the upper section which is noticeable at certain angles of light. ~Cathedral Fine ArtWe are picture dealers and have been since 1989.
