Hollywood Film Company Multi-format Rewinds with Spring Reel Clamps w/rubber pad   Classic HFC Rewinds - Auction is for a set of 2.

These are the Large - Professional size with 10 inches from Shaft to Bench.  They will take up to a 19 1/2 inch reel.  The 5 inch shaft comes with Spring Reel Clamps to handle all the common sizes.  16mm & 35mm reels fit the reel drive key - and the clamps hold the reels against that key.  8mm reels fit the shaft - but the 16/35 key is too large for the smaller slot - so the clamps with rubber pad hold the smaller reels in place.  Super-8 reels don't fit the shaft or key - but you can buy a set of adapters to make the Super-8 reels fit the shafts on eBay.

A right handed person puts the tension screw on the left - feed rewind, and always starts with the full reel on the left.  That way you are always doing most of the work with your Strongest Arm.  The guide below explains how it works.  If you had a tension screw on the take up reel (right), you might accidentally leave it engaged, and work against it - kind of like driving with the emergency brake on.   Shipping is FedEx, and handles & shafts may be removed for shipping.

Setting Up your Editing Bench

I regularly get questions that show me a new generation of Film Makers is getting set up.  Here is some information on setting up your rewinds and editing bench.  First - when you receive your Rewinds - you will probably need to re-assemble them.  The handle has a bolt that screws into the handle.  You should screw the handle down to where you have 1/8 inch space showing between the wooden handle and the metal arm.  Then put the nut on the back of the arm and tighten it.  This locks the shaft - but leaves the handle loose enough to operate.  The film reel shaft inserts from the front with a screw on the back.  Ediquip, Moviola rewinds have a couple of tabs on the shaft collar that fit into groves on the rewind - and use a flat blade screwdriver to tighten the screw. HFC - Hollywood Film Company Rewinds use a small pin that engages the collar on the shaft and need a hex wrench to tighten the screw - sometimes the screws are standard flat blades.  Neumade shafts are not easily removable and use metal pins on the inside.  Don't mess with them unless you have to.

Traditionally - you want to mount the rewinds to a board - not directly to your table surface (Divorce/inheritance Hazard).   Go to a home improvement store and buy a shelf or board 3-4 feet long and 12 inches wide - and some rubber stick-on feet to raise the shelf high enough to clear the heads of your mounting screws.  Today it is easier to mount the bolt up - with the nut on top.  If you will be needing to store these items separately - wingnuts are a good option.  This also looks good as a display piece when not in use.  Buy a few flat washers, and mount or glue them under the front edge of the rewinds to tilt them slightly backward.  This means that gravity will be your friend.  Every editor has gotten lazy at one point or another and not used a flip-lever or clamp to hold the reel in place and had it drift to the front of the shaft , fall off at high speed, and lay waste to his editing bench.  A slight backwards tilt will save you from damage and injury.

These instructions are designed for a Right-Handed person.  If you are Left-Handed - reverse the rewinds.  If you are Right Handed - generally your right arm has the most strength.  You want to capitalize on this.  You should plan on all winding, cleaning, or viewing operations to have the full reel of film start on the Left Rewind.  Generally this means you need the left unit to either have a tension screw or an arm brake.  The right rewind doesn't need either.  You control the speed and tension with your right arm.  If you have a tension screw on the right rewind - you will sometimes forget the screw is engaged and be working against it.  So for viewing - you want the film on the Left Rewind with the film "Under" and the sprockets away from you.  For Rewinding you want the full reel on the Left Rewind with the film coming over the top to your Right Rewind.  Adjust the tension so there is no slack in the film.  Use your left hand in a light-weight cotton glove to control the filml - or if you have an arm brake - use your arm to control the speed, and your gloved hand to pull the film slightly against the back edge of the take-up reel.  Wind the film somewhat tight.  You want to avoid a loose wind - as the film can "cinch" and scratch.  You want to avoid an uneven wind - because you can end up with a part of the film "sticking out" where it can be broken off.  In fact - Film should only be stored Vertically to avoid a heavy stack of film crushing edges on the lower reels.  Either buy a film rack or build a rack out of 2x2's mounted about 6 inches apart.

HFC Rewinds have a tension screw that covers a Ball Bearing, Heavy Spring, and Pressed Fiber Fork Brake.  When you take the screw housing off - the ball bearing will roll under the nearest desk, couch, refrigerator, or car.  Future Archeologists will find it - but you won't.  The spring and ball bearing can be replaced at any complete hardware store - such as ACE.  The fiber brake isn't available any more.  Experiment.  Ediquip and Moviola Rewinds have a short heavy spring, and a resin cylinder brake shoe.  At ACE you can find a heavy spring and cut it off to the right length, and they sell Nylon spacers or cylinders that are the correct size for the tension screw.

And a little History.    HFC had an extensive Machine Shop north of Hollywood - The size of a COSTCO Store.  As a pioneer in the Film Industry they manufactured all of their own equipment - and much of their competitors'.  They were THE brand of choice for both Movie Theaters and the Hollywood Studios.  They hold up well.  But the company did not.  They were the last to fold - about 4 years ago.
