This early group of four message sticks come from Groote Eyelandt and 'were used to help convey information about inter-group meetings and other activities'*. They were collected in the 1950's and have been held in a private museum until now - one has the museum label which reads 'Message Sticks'. They are carved from hardwood and have been painted with earth pigments without fixative and are in excellent condition. They measure between 40cm and 48cm in height.
