Gorgeous Antique Wooden Simplex Step Ladder/Library Ladder. Beautiful Victorian Simplex Ladder - 6 tread Step or Library Ladder This ladder would make a lovely character piece just leaning against a wall, while still being useful for reaching up to high book shelves or the like. Simplex Step Ladders were produced in England over many years so it is difficult to say exactly when this one was made, but from what I can ascertain, it is likely to be Victorian approx 1890s. The ladder has shaped handles and stunning shaped iron hinges that read 'SIMPLEX LADDERS'. There is a cast iron cross member that holds the ladder open with a patent action mechanism stamped 'Self Acting Stop Pat No 6356'. With the lift of a finger, the mechanism then closes again and the ladder can be easily carried as it is quite light. The cast iron cross member gives it an attractive appearance and looks good when the ladder is open or closed. The ladder is designed to sit flat against a wall. There is a lovely patina to the wood and it is in very good condition for something that has obviously had a utilitarian purpose. The wooden cross bar on the very bottom at the back of the ladder appears to have been replaced as it would normally have been shaped to match the cross bar at the top. Please note, that it would not meet modern standards for ladders as the steps are narrower than we are commonly used to, and it might need a little bit sanding off the bottom to ensure it stands straight. The ladder is approx 175 cm high when open and 190 cm high when closed. It is 51 cm wide at the base and 30.5 cm wide at the top. Pick up from Malvern East in Melbourne.
