Since 1977, his grandson Charles Melia and his wife Françoise, and today their daughter Anne-Charlotte and their son-in-law Laurent, have been working to hoist the vineyard into the first place of the Chateauneuf du Pape Appellation dOrigine Contrôlée. Situated at the heart of the Chateauneuf du Pape ‘Appellation, between Avignon and Orange, the castle ‘La Font du Loup is set in the charming and convivial Provencal village Courthézon, a city of art and history. La Font du Loup is a family domain whose name already appeared on the Napoleonic land register. Font du Loup is a unique vineyard in that their vineyards are on north facing slopes and the soils have a high percentage of sand. These north facing, sandy slopes tend to ripen more slowly than most in Chateauneuf du Pape. This results in wines that are more complex, aromatic and contain less alcohol. The style is more about finesse and elegance, rather than power and extraction. These wines add a refreshing change of pace to a region whos wines can become a touch heavy and alcoholic. 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault. Average 60 year old vines. 70% Sandy sediment soil 70% with 30% pebbles north facing. Harvest from 22 september to 8 october. Total production 2,000 cases. Smoothness and elegance merge effortlessly in this superb wine. This is a sinewy wine that begins with power and focus, tart red fruits, predominantly raspberry and currant. Candied ripe cherry aromas add lovely grace notes indicative of rich, clean, natural acids . The stunning red fruits are polished and backed with details such as dried Provence herbs, and a tiny hint of mint. There is spice and tannins embodied in an elegant texture, which shows that the wine has been well oaked in used French barrels for more than 12 months, assuring a great aging potential. Paring : Combines perfectly with beef, duck, or lamb with rosemary.Open 1 hour before serving. Well adapted to ageing.
