Know Your ChampagneThe Champagne region is one of the most exciting today, with a bevy of small producers creating flavours giving a greater expression of style and place.A prime focus - and a personal passion - are the members of an elite group of grower-producers known as the 'Club Trésors de Champagne' or 'Special Club', which was founded in 1971. Currently consisting of 28 producers, all member wines undergo a rigorous selection before release and are the pinnacle of what they can produce. To become a 'Special Club' release requires the absolute best and is a guarantee of excellence. There are good Champagnes... There are great Champagnes... And then there is the Special Club... Find out more here Product Details Traditionally non-vintage champagnes were the best expression of a house style. A vintage wine however should reflect all the personality, spirit and circumstances of each particular year interpreted by each producer’s unique, individual style. Champagne has the most marginal climate of all wine producing regions. No two vintages are ever the same and each year it is these varying conditions that can make champagne so fascinating. Historically vintage champagnes were only produced three or four times a decade. These days’ vintage champagnes are produced much more regularly. It may be due to better viticulture, perhaps global warming, but it seems we can now enjoy the experience much more frequently. “This is one of the finest grower estates in the Grande Vallée de la Marne. Chiquet’s wines combine a generous depth of fruit with a pronounced character of place – if you want to know what the wines of the Grande Vallée should feel like, these are an excellent introduction. Chiquet’s wines generally show well young, thanks to the forward fruitiness of their Marne terroirs. Yet with their balance and depth they can also age extremely well, even the non-vintage Brut Tradition, as I’ve seen from several old examples dating all the way back to 1964.” – Peter LiemThe original Nicolas Chiquet planted his first vines in 1746. Since then, eight generations have carried on the family tradition. Gaston Chiquet launched his own brand in 1935. They now own 23 hectares covering Dizy, Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Hautvillers. The proportions cultivated are Chardonnay 40%, Pinot Meunier 40% and Pinot Noir 20%. All of the fruit (including that which is used in the non-vintage blend) comes from Premier and Grand Cru grapes. Today, the estate is managed by the very talented Nicolas Chiquet (Gaston’s grandson).Dizy has a Premier Cru classification with a rating of 95% and has much in common with its neighbouring village Aÿ. Nicolas does not practice any oak aging; he believes that concentration, fruit maturity and malolactic fermentation impart enough body and texture to make aging in barrel unnecessary. The Chiquets are cousins of the Jacquesson Chiquets just around the corner. The wines show good weight and intensity, and they are proud to use their high quality Pinot Meunier. Having Premier Cru vineyards helps since it basically enables access to Pinot Meunier, which cannot be grown in Grand Cru designated vineyards! Pinot Meunier is a much maligned variety. Nicolas makes a wonderful 100% Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru from Aÿ which is a masterpiece – but sadly this is only available in small quantities. He also makes a vintage reserve Aÿ Blanc de Blancs, which is only available in magnums! We continue to urge their importer to bring more Chiquet in and we definitely hope to obtain stock in the future. Nicolas has achieved something of ‘cult’ status in the U.S. and his reputation is certainly on the rise. As a member of the ‘Club Trésors’, Nicolas certainly acts as a ‘mover and shaker’ for the group. The 2007 Special Club, we were informed by the importer, has all been allocated, unfortunately for us. However, does this mean that the next release that we see will be from the brilliant 2008? We have put up our hands to secure as much as we can and can’t wait for its arrival judging by the brilliance of earlier releases.“Our essential goal is to maintain the quality requirements we have inherited… The techniques improved, the tradition remains.” – Nicolas Chiquet In his excellent book, ‘The Finest Wines of Champagne’, Michael Edwards summarised Gaston Chiquet:“These Champagnes pre-eminently give the drinker a real sense of place, of the special plots of earth from which they come – the antithesis of a big house’s blend of many parts.” Champagne Gaston Chiquet912 Avenue du Général Leclerc, 51530 DIZYTel: +33 03 26 55 22 02 DescriptionWhat David has to say... "This is a wine of serious mettle… Or precious metal? Cuvée Or is a very fitting title given its golden label, hue and accolades. The 2004 blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from the vineyards of Hautvillers, Dizy and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. The vines have reached an impressive average age of 27 years, while the wine itself spends at least 5 years aging on the lees. How long it sits in your cellar is a question of self-restraint. The 2004 vintage sports a moderate dosage of 8 grams per litre; go for gold." 93pts – David DonaldAdditional InformationVintage2004RegionChampagneAlcohol Vol8%Volume750mLCase Size1 Bottle PaymentIf paying by bank deposit, please leave your ebay username in the description so that your payment may be readily identified.
