DESCRIPTION
This is an interesting work looking at the local names of flowers and fruits, focused on Southern England in Somerset, Devon, Dorset, and Wiltshire. The work lists the local names, alongside information of where the author received the information from, often charmingly from his correspondents and who he describes and 'young people in the district'.
The work was inspired after someone wrote into the 'Somerset County Herald' with an anecdote about another name for Michaelmas Daisy, enquiring whether any work like this has ever been published. The author hoped that it would be a helpful work for young people, to help them learn the official names of plant that they only knew the colloquial names of.
Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Ex Libris L. E. J. & M. A. Brooke'.
