The Heritage of Australia: the Illustrated Register of the National Estate was published in 1981 and it answered a need felt by Australians for information about the public buildings and private homes and monuments that reflect different aspects of our past, as well as being an architectural record. Added to this was a listing of natural features, which are equally part of our heritage, the vistas, mountains, plains, flora and fauna, and remnants of Australia’s prehistory, which all contribute to our national character. The Heritage of South Australia and Northern Territory draws from this earlier volume, and includes items added to the Register in the intervening years. It contains a detailed index for easy reference, as well as illustrations of many of the buildings and sites described. The Australian Heritage Commission, which keeps the Register, has confirmed the authoritative text.
