'Salt & Pepper’  Sculptural Pieces

by David & Hermia Boyd

Impressively large and very decorative Salt & Pepper Sculptural pieces by Australian pottery masters, David & Hermia Boyd.

Beautiful light bluish green background and black squiggly/wavy circle decoration, terracotta with super smooth glaze, typical ‘ Boyd’.

Organic hand-made shape, well sized and very, very touchable!

Signed  D H Boyd' to base of both.

The John Vader book on David & Hermia Boyd (1977, p73 & 75) shows the Boyds made these in a few different styles around 1965. I dont expect anyone buying these items would actually use them as salt & pepper shakers - due to their value and beauty - they are sculptural display pieces however, Im not sure that these are actually pair - as the shape/designs are different - and they both have just one hole at the top but, I did purchase them both as a ‘pair a few years ago. Vader says: Salt and pepper shakers Davids method of closing the top to draw up a narrow pot against the pressure of air trapped inside. England C1965.

Rare to find.

"The Boyd artistic dynasty began with the marriage of Emma Minnie à Beckett (known as Minnie) and Arthur Merric Boyd in 1886. Both were already established as painters at the time of their marriage. Their second-born son Merric Boyd   married Doris Gough   and had five artistic children, Lucy de Guzman Boyd, Arthur Boyd, Guy Boyd, David Boyd and Mary Elizabeth Boyd.

David Fielding Gough Boyd was born on 23 August 1924 in Murrumbeena, Victoria.

In 1948 David Boyd married Hermia Lloyd-Jones , the daughter of graphic artist Herman and Erica Lloyd-Jones. Following the tradition of their family, their three daughters Amanda, Lucinda, and Cassandra are artists…”.       Courtesy of the Wikipedia webpage
