1st WATERMARK “LARGE OS” KANGAROOS: "ON HIS MAJESTY’S SERVICE" 2021 CV$2,700

thanksforlooking@danmagpie'sstamps A LOVELY SET OF 1913  “LARGE OS ” PERFORATED KANGAROO STAMPS: "ON HIS MAJESTY'S OFFICIAL SERVICE” - VERY FINE - TOTAL 2021 CV$2,700 (5/- QUITE SCARCE WITH 2021 CV$1,500 CENTERED LOW)  The Australian Commonwealth Government punctured Commonwealth postage stamps with the LARGE OS  and SMALL OS  punctures to prevent petty theft and to control the use of postage stamps within the public service. Other State Governments of Australia were issuing their own stamps and using their own punctures for Official Service well before the 1913 Kangaroo stamps were introduced. The individual State Governments, such as New South Wales used ' OSNSW' and ' G'over'NSW' , the Government of Tasmania used the ' T' puncture, South Australia ' SA' , Victoria ' VG' (post 1933) and Western Australia the ' WA' and later, after 1933, ' W' over 'A' .   The   LARGE OS puncture was 14mm high and 14mm across with the 'O' consisting of 18 holes and the 'S' 17 holes. The OS proved to be too large and the stamp often tore across the 'OS' perforation rather than along the perforations that were designed for separation. Consequently, and only about two months since the introduction of the Large OS puncture, the 'Small OS' puncture was introduced and located in the upper half of the stamps  (5½mm high and 8½mm wide) . This corrected the problem of early 1913 to an extent, and at the same time, ensured that the LARGE OS punctured Kangaroo would be highly collectible and become relatively scarce over time, given the very limited (early 1913) perforation run. Additionally, the sheets of stamps supplied for 'official use' were often those rejected for supply to the public due to misalignment or misperforation, so examples with double, triple or misaligned perforations (off center) are relatively common. 'OS Stamps' with good centering and perforations are considered premium stamps and are highly sought by collectors.  The 'LARGE OS' puncture was applied to every 1st Watermark (1913) Kangaroo issue. The 10/- PINK CVs at $10,000; THE £1 BROWN&BLUE CVs at $12,500 and the £2 ROSE CVs at $70,000. This set to the 5/- value includes  the scarce 2 ½d INDIGO (CV$300) as well as a YELLOWORANGE to compare against the ORANGE. The lovely 2/- BROWN here was socked-on-the-nose in MELBOURNE on 3 SEP 1914. Both 1d REDs (Die I & Die II) punctured LARGE OS are also included (the Die IIa was NOT punctured LARGE OS). The 5/- YELLOW carries the scarce "PUBLIC OFFICES MELBOURNE" postmark.      This is a very nice group of marsupials 'with holes in them'. The 5/- YELLOW IS centered low, however many of the LARGE OS's were (they were chosen for puncturing because they were 'off center'). The colour here is very nice and all carry fine postmarks.     BUY WITH CONFIDENCE. MONEY BACK GUARANTEE (See Policy).
