Know Your ChampagneThe Champagne region is one of the most exciting today, with a bevy of small producers creating flavours giving a greater expression of style and place.A prime focus - and a personal passion - are the members of an elite group of grower-producers known as the 'Club Trésors de Champagne' or 'Special Club', which was founded in 1971. Currently consisting of 28 producers, all member wines undergo a rigorous selection before release and are the pinnacle of what they can produce. To become a 'Special Club' release requires the absolute best and is a guarantee of excellence. There are good Champagnes... There are great Champagnes... And then there is the Special Club. Find out more here Product DetailsDo not be fooled by the Gallic elegance of Cécile Grongnet: Her statuesque good looks behold a winemaker driven by passion, wisdom and perhaps a hint of sass. It is these qualities which manifest in her wines; a perfect balance of elegance, finesse and brilliance.Cécile is the fifth generation of Grongnet proud to run the family house, after her great-great-grandfather Edmond founded it in 1885. Her predecessor, father Guy, is still hanging around to pass on the wealth of knowledge of the previous four generations. Make no mistake though: Cécile is front and centre of operations at Grongnet, and woe betide those who try to wrest any aspect of the winemaking from her talented grasp. She has a logical approach to viticulture that ultimately respects the environment whilst producing some very fine Champagne that deserves wider recognition.Grongnet is based in Étoges with 18 hectares of local vineyards planted with 60% Chardonnay and 20% each of the Pinots. Their prime location in the Côte des Blancs affords the wines of Grongnet with a powerful fruit punch. Luckily for the rest of us, Cécile’s hand has tamed the rich wines and crafted a beautiful expression of their terroir. Considering a house that’s been giving voice to the Côte des Blancs terroir since the late 19th century, it really is not surprising to know that they were founding members of the Club Trésors de Champagne (Special Club).Do your ears prick up at the mention of ‘ultra brut’? This is a house that does not compromise on fruit quality and has extremely low dosage, if any, as a result. Prestige cuvées enjoy fermentation in large oak foudres (just like Selosse, Jacquesson and Krug), succeeded by a lengthy wait on the lees before disgorgement. Very rarely does malolactic fermentation occur, giving the wines some of that elusive quality of brilliance. Romping around a winery floor, playing hide-and-seek amongst the foudres… Not a conventional childhood (WHS may also disapprove), but Cécile is proud to have experienced hers that way, and to be ingrained with the passion for the work of her forefathers. As long as Grongnet continues to produce their extraordinary wine, it will suffice to say that we are glad for that winery playground too!Champagne Grongnet 41 Grande Rue 51270 EtogesTel: +33 (0)3 26 59 30 50DescriptionCan't decide? Why not treat yourself to 6 of the finest from Grongnet Champagnes...What David has to say...The village of Etoges is sometimes referred to as the ‘Mini-Côte des Blancs’ due to the sheer excellence and quality of the Chardonnay produced there. Cecile Grongnet is doing some great things and I love everything they produce. As an added bonus with this pack, you’ll be able to compare the brilliant 2008 Special Club alongside the excellent 2000 Club – Which wine you prefer may make for many many heated discussions! Settle back and appreciate them both…2 x Blanc de Blancs NV The base wine is from 2010 and shows wonderful freshness and vibrancy. For lovers of elegant and fine Blanc de Blancs: it’s showing lifted citrus, jasmine and acacia notes with creamy, brioche overlays. This cuvée possesses a superfine mousse with a wonderful finish that lingers long on the palate. Grongnet wines do not undergo malolactic fermentation, giving a spine of refreshing acidity that make you look forward to the next exquisite mouthful!Carpe Diem Brut NV ‘Seize the Day’: rather an apt title for this very special cuvée from Grongnet. It is a blend of 60% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier, with all fruit sourced from their vineyards in the village of Etoges. This wine is barrel fermented and matured in large oak foudres (much like Krug, Selosse and Jacquesson). This maturation gives an added depth and complexity and the wines do not go through malolactic fermentation. The base wine is predominately 2007. Possessing multi-layered, complex spicy flavours, it is rich and full on the palate but beautifully balanced by a spine of refreshing acidity. Very classy.Carpe Diem Extra Brut NV This is an ultra-rare example of a cuvee that has undergone ficelage: the ancient art of tying down the cork to the bottle with twine. Requiring great skill, even an expert can only complete about 50 bottles in an hour. The intricate knots are tied while still attached to the ball of twine; this process is then repeated twice forming a cross on the top of the cork. For this much effort, only the very best goes into the bottle! Carpe Diem Brut is a blend of 70% Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier 20%, Pinot Noir 10% which has been fermented and matured for three years in large oak foudres, before a further three or more years in the bottle. Dry, complex and full on the palate, it is multi-layered extravaganza of spice, savoury and exotic fruit flavours. Wonderfully textured and possessing and incredible length of palate, this is another terrific cuvée from Grongnet.Special Club 2008 43% of this wine is Chardonnay which has been barrel fermented in large oak foudres (450 hectolitres) and left on the lees for an extended period prior to bottling. The remaining 57% is Pinot Noir, fermented in tank. The resulting wine possesses a very pure, pristine nose followed by a beautifully fine, delineated palate which is incredibly youthful. It’s showing wonderful balance and finesse with flavours of fresh pear, almond and zesty notes; a creamily textured palate with incredible length. This is another great wine from the brilliant 2008 vintage.Special Club 2000 This Special Club release from a vintage that divided opinions is a blend of 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier. It is still showing a very pale youthful colour. The Chardonnay component has been fermented and matured in large oak foudres which has added texture, weight and depth to the blend. The wine hints at clarified honey, grilled nuts and white floral notes, with some toasty, brioche edges on the finish. It’s a perfectly aged, developed Champagne giving intense pleasure right now!$490 normally – Special 6-Pack offer – Just $385Price: $490.00$385.00Additional InformationVintageVariousRegionChampagneAlcohol Vol12 - 14%Volume750mLCase Size6 Bottles PaymentIf paying by bank deposit, please leave your ebay username in the description so that your payment may be readily identified.
