Private Oliver James Hull 401 of the 22 battalion: Military Medal Immediate award in the field 26th of August 1916.

The Battle of Mouquet Farm , 23 July – 3 September 1916

The citation: as stated in the unit records

"For conspicuous gallantry in action on the left flank of the attack on 54 at   Mouquet Farm  on the 26 of August 1916 when he maintained communication between the isolated post held by the 22 Division  AIF and under 21 battalion. This involved repeated movement across the open under heavy fire. Pte Hull brought in his body of commanding officer, Captain R. G. Smith in the face of continuous sniping fire. By this action and valuable reports, Pte Hull did proved himself to be a very fine type of solder.''

Private Oliver James Hull joined 22 battalion on the 1st of February 1915, and was a member of B Company of the 22nd battalion, he disembarked at Alexandria on the 30th of August 1915 on route to Gallipoli, and he disembarked at Mudros on the 27th of December 1915 and served at Gallipoli up to the end of the campaign. On the 26th of March 1916 he was part of the British expeditionary forces in France with the 22nd Battalion.

Oliver James Hull was repatriated to England on the 25th of June 1918 due to insomnia and deafness and returned to Australia on the 26th of August 1918 diagnosed with shell shock, Oliver James Hull migrated to South Africa later in life. In 1957 he applied for the South Africa medal for war service 1939-45, for services rendered during World War 2 this medal was issued in 1957. Oliver James Hull died in Germiston South Africa on the 20th of January 1989 at the age of 97.

The medal group consists of the MM, 1914/15 star, British war medal, victory medal. South Africa service medal and the Somme commemorative medal with the Gallipoli plaque, the certificates and 32 pages of research and a copy of the London gazette verifying the MM.
