Bracelet Type: Hinged Bangle Bracelet Closure/Clasp Type: Push-in Clasp With Missing Safety Chain Link Type: Rounded and Polished Gold Filled over Base Metal  Notable Features: This bracelet was handmade during the Art Deco era. The Art Deco era saw a great deal of change not only in the art of jewelry making but in the world itself. New styles of speaking, acting, dressing, and living developed with the invention of new technology and ideologies, all of which affected the appearance of jewelry. Jewelry during the Art Deco era, or the Gatsby era,  leaned towards flashy, with gorgeous large stones serving as the focal points of the pieces of jewelry. The lines of Art Deco era jewelry extended outwards as the buildings of the rapidly growing cities extended upwards - long, ray-like lines are a trademark of Art Deco era jewelry. Modernity and style were the drivers in the jewelry world during the Art Deco era, as is evidenced by this lovely item of jewelry. A fascinating piece of history, this bangle would have been gifted as a wedding bracelet and is made out of gold washed base metal and is adorned with chased floral and swirl designs. Wedding bracelets were especially popular during the 19th and 20th centuries with the reemergence of Renaissance jewelry styles but had been in use centuries earlier. Wedding bracelets are currently enjoying renewed popularity as the vintage theme has re-emerged in modern weddings. Traditionally wedding bracelets were used in place of an engagement and wedding ring and were engraved with the initials of the wearer. The bracelet was created using repousse metalworking techniques to hand-hammer 14k yellow gold filled over base metal into the round shape of the bangle, creating a sturdy, hollow band perfect for chasing. The front of the bracelet's band has been chased by hand with an elegant design of floral accents that would have been very fashionable during the Art Deco era, which favored jewelry that reflected the beauty and wonder of nature over the more ornate jewelry of the preceding Art Nouveau era. Completing the bracelet is a hinge and push-in clasp for comfortable and secure wear. A gorgeous example of Art Deco jewelry, this bracelet would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don't miss your chance to own this glamorous piece of history.  Damage: Age appropriate wear. The gold fill is slightly worn or tarnished in some places, which is to be expected of an item of this age. This bracelet once had a safety chain which was broken off of the side of the bracelet - the remaining bale is slightly damaged and has repairs on both sides of the clasp from an attempted repair of the safety chain at some point in this bracelet's history. The price has been reduced to reflect this.  *This listing is for the item only. All display boxes and/or photography props do not come with your purchase.* The History The Art Deco era is famous for being the "Gatsby" or "Roaring Twenties" era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Wedding bracelets have a long history stretching back centuries and were especially popular in 19th century Europe as Victorians looked back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance for influence in their art and jewelry. Historically, a groom would give his bride a beautifully engraved bracelet on their wedding day, but occasionally they would also be gifted in sets—one given upon engagement, and the other on the day of the wedding. Alternately these sets would come as two different sized bracelets, a larger one for the groom and the smaller for the bride. During the Victorian and Art Nouveau eras, these bracelets were also referred to as “handcuff bracelets” and were a symbol of matrimonial commitment, usually used in place of an engagement or wedding ring. Gold filled jewelry consists of an outer solid gold layer over a metal base, and 5% of its weight should be derived from gold. This solid layer of gold is laid over a base of sterling silver or some other kind of metal to produce a high-quality gold look. Chasing is a metalworking technique that uses a nail-like tool and hammer to hand etch patterns onto a metal surface. This process creates a design that is sunk into the front of the surface using indentations, grooves, and channels. Chasing is thousands of years old and was a very difficult and time-consuming technique that is still used by metalsmiths today.
