Russian-born painter, graphic designer and sculptor Génia Minache used her French name, rather than the Russian name Zhenya Minash, for most of her illustration work. Daughter of the St. Petersburg architect Sima Isaakovich Minash (1877-1945), she settled with her family after the 1917 revolution, first in Prague, then in Paris. In the early 1930s, she studied at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, painting mainly in gouache and watercolor in an Art Nouveau style. In 1931, she participated in the exhibition of the Art section of the Association of Russians Graduates of Higher Educational Institutions Abroad (OROVUZ) and won first prize for a sculpture “The Black Thinker”; In 1934, she held her first exhibition at the Bernheim-Jeune gallery. From 1945, she began illustrating books, beginning with a commission for illustrations for Pierre Lou's collection of erotic poetry Les mots de Bilitis; this was followed by illustrations for several other titles including Diderot's Les bijoux indiscrets, Kama Sûtra and Omar Khayyám.
