This is a very attractive and fine quality antique (or near antique) Japanese Satsuma plate, made for wall hanging or other display. It is marked 宝山(Hozan), which is one of the known marks of Matsumoto Hozan, a highly respected Satsuma decorator of the late Meiji and Taisho periods. High quality Meiji era pieces by this artist sell at Christies and Bonhams and many are listed by Carters and Artnet.
This lovely plate has a traditional bird and flower (kacho-e ) decoration of a pheasant standing on rocks surrounded by foliage and flowers (which I think are tree peonies, lilies and cosmos), all edged with excellent gilding and with some airbrushed shading in the background which makes good use of negative space. The rim is edged with a finely rendered gilt on black brocade border. The decoration is all carefully drawn and its quality is excellent. The reverse is undecorated, bar the rectangular gold-on-black artist’s cartouche. The plate is round and quite large - 24.7 cm or 9.75 inches in diameter. The footrim is pierced with 3 holes, for wall hanging.
This lovely plate probably dates to the Taisho period (1912-26). The condition is truly excellent, including the gilding. No cracks, chips, scratches, staining, dirt or restoration.
This is the kind of Satsuma that most sellers would label as "Meiji Period" (1868-1912) without a second thought. But, I am straightforward that it probably dates to the Taisho Period. But it is very fine quality - much better than most Taisho Satsuma.
