Item:326108842061Australian convict and army barracks folding bed early 1800s. Reduced to as low as I go.Convict era Bed. Often used in prisons, hospitals, barracks etc. These were made for the Board of Ordnance. It has a partial E^D stamp for Engineers Department, a plain Broad Arrow stamp and two B^O stamps for Board of Ordnance = pre1855. The historic illustration from 1860, after the Board of Ordnance became the War Department, is for reference only and is not included. As you can see from the photos, the bed folds up to become a chair during the day and allows extra space in the cell or barracks. It completely flat-packs by undoing 8 square nuts - 4 for the bed ends and 4 for the middle legs. Only one leg bolt is not original. It is very heavy and i'd guess it t be 60kg or more. These beds are blacksmith made, so no two are the same, but made to a pattern as required. There is some battleship grey paint and light surface rust present. Very good and solid condition considering it is between 170 and 220 years old. Pick up from Camberwell, Victoria or organise own shipping.
