"Trains in Transition," third volume in Lucius Beebe's trilogy of the saga of American railroading and companion volume to"High Iron, A Book of Trains," and "Highliners, A Railroad Album," is designed to survey the achievements of steam and steel in rail transport during the past decade and, with the aid of ample and dramatic illustrations, to chronicle the up-to-the-minute railroad practices which have made overland travel a part of the national legend.
Mr. Beebe's two previous volumes have dealt with the romantic interludes of railroading during the nineteenth century and with the speed, operations and de luxe devisings of the varnish flyers which have thundered over the high iron in recent times. "Trains in Transition" rounds out a century of motive power which has come to be known as the cycle of steam and recognizes in spacious detail the advent of a new form of power in the Diesel-electric locomotive and the light weight air-flow equipment which complements it. There are chapters on the technical aspects of Diesel-electric power, on the fabrication and operations of modern, high speed passenger trains and the evolution of the hotshot freights which today operate on schedules only yesterday sacred to extra-fare limiteds.
"Trains in Transition" is an authoritative and at the same time popular survey of American railroading of the current moment. Its 176 illustrations, a large percentage of them taken by the author and others contributed by acknowledged leaders in the specialized field of rail photography, cover the subject factually and ,geographically. Amateurs of the classic aspects of steam railroading as well as Diesel-electric enthusiasts will find esthetic and practical satisfaction in the contents of "Trains in Transition."
