Seller: southflower (4,417) 99.8%, Location: Modbury Heights, SA, Ships to: AU, Item: 141888484500 Sunlight: Partial Shade, Climate: Cold, Foliage: Semi-evergreen, Watering: Medium, Details: Akebia Trifoliata Chocolate Vine x 5 seeds Akebia is a loose-scrambling climber from the Far East — its Japanese name is 'Mitsuba-akebi' — also known as the chocolate vine, it is sought after by discerning gardeners for its usually purple flowers in April and delicious vanilla scent. Both striking and unusual, it makes an excellent scrambler over old stumps or up sturdy trees, on walls where there are wires, on pergolas or a large-spaced trellis, and certainly deserves a prominent position. Akebia also bears edible, sausage-shaped fruits in autumn. You need two plants of the same species to ensure fertilisation. And you need a long, hot summer. The fruits, if you're lucky enough to get them, split open to reveal black seeds in a white pulp. How to grow Akebias are hardy in most of this country and suit any aspect, except east, as the sun can damage them if it comes out too early after a frosty night. The best chance of fruit is from plants grown on a south wall, but the flower colour may fade in strong sunlight. These vigorous climbers like deep, fertile soil, water in the growing season and some support. Prune after flowering if they have outgrown their space or become woody. They do not seem much affected by pests or diseases. Propagation Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours.Stratification: cold stratify for 30 days.Germination: sow seed 1/8" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed.The seed usually germinates in 1 - 3 months at 15°C. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in light shade in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant out in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Please READ our terms below BEFORE PURCHASING from our store.1 Gifts & Free itemsGift packs of seeds are subject to one gift per paid order per day if purchased 3 or more packets of seeds in one transaction.
