It was likely to have been crafted earlier but this is undetermined. Massive in size and weight, this Hunting Killing Carved Boomerang Axe Tomahawk is a length of 635mm (25 inches) and weighs a staggering 865 grams (30 Ounces), holding an extraordinary 3 dimensional (3d) texture with the craftsmanship and as can being seen from the pictures, has a depiction of an Aboriginal Male walking with hunting tools to his shoulder and side. The Quality is amazing, the color from my understanding is created from natural pigments bound with Kangaroo gut and resin. This example is natural and and has not been enhanced, lacquered or oiled - A true quality grade and museum classed collectible. With nearly 35 years passed since obtaining, the color and condition is as good now as it was when first coming to our hands for display and keepsake. Wirrimbah is the trademark shown underneath the Walking Aboriginal Hunting Man, it still holds and retains the Authenticity Label that was attached with this example, it is only my opinion, but I would suggest leaving this label in place. The wood used was local to the area, again natural and un-enhanced it holds a viberant wood color with aged grain and without any diminishing cracks - Solid in the craftsmanship, there are light marks, ever so minor grazing and chips that only add to the visual appearance. RARE in this condition, RARE in this style and RARE to be offered to a collector - Below is some history to the Warumungu Country, their spoken languages and a history to the people. The workmanship is a rare feature and should not disappoint with the Aboriginal crafted Hunting Killing Carved Boomerang Axe Tomahawk displayed in a clean and usable condition. It is uncommon to have an Aboriginal crafted Hunting Killing Carved Boomerang Axe Tomahawk that holds a wonderful character, appeal and displays as an authentic antique. Along with a heavy weight of 865.00 grams the condition is 100% original as received. There are some light signs of use and handling. As a classic collectible, this example will display proudly knowing the history is from a important and historical by gone era. ***IMPORTANT NOTE FOR INTERNATIONAL BUYERS*** - It is the obligation of the BUYER to ensure this item is lawfully acceptable to import to your country and abides by your countries importation laws. HISTORY Waramungu - The main language of Tennant Creek and surrounding communities, however there are now more speakers of Warlpiri or Alyawarr living in Tennant Creek.Tennant Creek is the urban centre of Warumungu country. During the 1970's, the era of the Federal government Self-Determination policy, Aboriginal people began to move or return to Tennant Creek from cattle stations and Warrabri Aboriginal settlement (Ali Curung).By the 1890's it is estimated that 100 people were living at camps around the Tennant Creek Telegraph Station, some receiving rations, some worked for the station. Many came to the site during the 1891-93 droughts, to the perennial waterholes along the creek, which Warumungu people traditionally used in drought years. In the 1930's gold was discovered, starting a gold rush, which brought hopefuls from across the country. Aboriginal people worked on the mines, many of which were located on what had been the Warumungu Reserve. Tennant Creek town was established in 1934, at a site 7 miles to the south of the Telegraph Station. It was off limits to Aboriginal people until the 1960's. Warumungu and Alyawarre people also worked at mines in the Davenport Murchinson Ranges, after wolfram discovered at Hatcher's Creek in 1913. Many Aboriginal people spent substantial periods of their lives there and on neighbouring Kurandi Station, where, in 1977 Aboriginal workers went on strike and staged a walk off.The life histories of most people include their experiences living on cattle stations, which eventually surrounded the original site of European settlement. Vast tracts of Warumungu country had been granted as pastoral leases and were stocked from the 1880's onwards. Running cattle on these lands was incompatible with Aboriginal hunting and gathering practices and people were forced to settle on stations or the reserve. Many men worked as stockmen, drovers, butchers and gardeners, while women carried out domestic work in the station houses. Payment was generally in rations only and conditions were generally very poor.Language Groups - Many Aboriginal people speak several different languages with English frequently being a third or even fourth language. 50.5% of the total population over 15 years speaks a language other than English at home (ABS National Regional Profile 2006). A map of the language groups is provided in the photos link. In addition to English, there are a range of different languages are used throughout the region and include: Warumungu Warlmanpa Warlpiri Jingulu Garawa Mudburra Kaytetye Alyawarr Anmatyerr WambayaTennant Creek is located between Katherine and Alice Springs along the Stuart Highway in the Barkly Region.Tennant Creek is a town located in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is the fifth largest town in the Northern Territory and it is located on the Stuart Highway, just south of the intersection with the western terminus of the Barkly Highway. The Barkly Tableland runs east from Tennant Creek towards the Queensland border and is among the most important cattle grazing areas in the Northern Territory.
