When your machine needs descaling, simply add 3 tablets to approximately 800ml of water (or the amount recommended by your coffee machines cleaning routine, if it has an automatic cycle) which can either be done in the tank itself, or in a separate container and then poured into the tank. For automatic machines there will usually be a programme which draws water, pauses, draws more, pauses and then at the end 'flushes' with clean water. For manual machines, you need to simulate this manually, by drawing a partial shot, stopping, waiting ten minutes, and repeating the process several times over the course of an hour. Filter Logic tablets take between 5 and 15 minutes to dissolve, although this can be sped up using warm tap water. Never leave a machine that is descaling unattended. Please note this product should not be used on any exterior surfaces of machines. Why do I need to descale my coffee machine? Limescale, present in a lot of tap water, is essentially calcium and magnesium which dissolves in water as it passes over and through it. Virtually all coffee machines with a tank fed water supply work using a thermoblock, which is essentially an 'inline' heating element which warms the water as it passes through. In order to keep this process efficient the 'bore' the water passes through is very small, usually only a few mm in diameter, and as most people will be aware from the state of their electric kettle, 'heating' water causes the limescale in it to precipitate and 'stick' to the surface. Unfortunately this also happens inside the thermoblock, causing the small channels to get coated with scale forming minerals. The end result? You get colder coffee, as the limescale stops the water making contact with the heating surfaces AND the machine gets warmer internally as the heat has to go somewhere else - This leads to premature breakdown and usually professional servicing to repair. But my machine has a filter, doesn't this remove Limescale? If you have a coffee machine with a water filter, such as those manufactured by Breville, Delonghi, Krups or Jura then yes, the filters do REDUCE limescale, but it is important to note they do not remove it entirely. This is because coffee is best made with water which is moderately hard (circa 70 parts per million of hardness) and at this level the technical effects described above can and will happen, just a little slower than with no treatment at all. If your machine has a water filter your regular descaling routine will probably be 'at every cartridge change' whereas if you do NOT have a water filter it is likely to be every three to four weeks (essentially twice as often). Prepare your machine: 1. Remove any water filter installed in the tank (if fitted) 2. Empty and clean water tank using fresh cold water - remove any surface dirt or grime with a clean cloth 3· Empty drip tray (if fitted), coffee grounds container (if fitted) and for manual machines ensure the coffee basket is empty For machines without a drip tray ensure you have a suitable receptacle capable of holding at least the capacity of the water tank available (bucket or jug or similar) Descaling Instructions: 1. Fill water tank to three-quarters full 2. Add up to 3 tablets (depending on level of descaling required) 3. Please wait until tablets are fully dissolved prior to usage. Depending on water temperature and ambient conditions this may take from 5 to 15 minutes. 4. Ensure there is a suitable receptacle beneath the coffee output to collect any water discharged by the machine. 5. If your machine has a DESCALE program (refer to the manual) run this as per the instructions, ignoring any messages regarding inserting tablets. 6. If your machine does not have a DESCALE program (most manual machines) then: a. Run the machine (without coffee grounds) for approximately thirty seconds until water flows from the discharge spout b. Stop the machine, allowing it to rest with descaling solution inside the pipework c. Wait for three minutes d. Run the machine again, allowing half of the remaining water in the tank to pass through e. Stop the machine allowing it to rest with descaling solution inside the pipework again f. Wait for three minutes g. Run the balance of the water in the tank through the machine. Just before the tank empties, stop the flow of water and again leave it to rest for three minutes. 7. Empty any remaining descaling solution from the tank into a Suitable sink or drain and rinse tank and any receptacles used thoroughly prior to re-use. 8. Refit water filter (if fitted) 9. Fill tank with cold, clean water. 10. For manual machines (or automatic machines which do not flush with clean water) run a single tank of clean water through the machine prior to re-use. Never leave an appliance unattended whilst descaling without adequate warning or notice for other potential users. Keep tablets away from children Always wear suitable skin and eye protection when handling or disposing of desclaing chemicals and their by-products Toxic to aquatic life. Dispose of responsibly. Always consult your appliance's manual before descaling If oxidisation and/or pitted metal surfaces are present in your appliance then any kind of limescale removing operation (descaling) may reveal these areas.
