Description: Comprises transcription from 4 diaries from successive generations dealing with primarily with the potato famine in Ireland and its effects on the successive generations

A reader review on the goodreads.com internet website (referring to the 2012 edition) states in part, “ This book follows the story of Polly's family through two world wars from the outlook of their daughter, Molly. I liked this book because it showed how families can be intertwined through the years. It tells how the poor and their struggles are related to the rich and their joys. I find family heritage fascinating .”

Polly Browne came from Ireland in 1840. She survived the awful Potato Famine, 1845-1849. The families of Connaught lived on potatoes and very little else. Polly was the daughter of Patrick and Bridget Nolan. They were married 1829 and had six children between 1830 and 1840.

Bridget came from a wealthy family but because she decided to marry Patrick the family disowned her, leaving her nothing.

In October 1845, Patrick and Bridget died. There was no time for grief, the children had to go on. They had a long journey ahead of them, so the five of them headed out to Dublin to find Mammy's sister, their Aunt Nellie.

On the way they saw terrible things. The two sisters, Sara and Veronica and their brother, Anthony died of the Famine Fever. They finally arrived and Aunt Nelly Nurses them back to health.

Polly Brown stayed with Aunt Nellie while the boys went off to find work. It wasn't long and they weren't heard of again .”

Polly married Sean O'Sullivan in 1865 in Liverpool. They had their first child in 1867, twins in 1869, two more children after that. Sean was 69 when he died. Polly died at 65 in 1925.

Molly married Patrick Murray in 1901 and had 4 children. Polly's great grand-daughter Lucy discovered a secret of her family's past. Can she keep this a secret? Will she find out what happened to Polly's two brothers after they left Dublin?

Teresa Tart was a native of Liverpool. Teresa lived in Australia for 30 years. She had two children and is widowed. She enjoys drawing, painting and writing. The inspiration to write Polly Browne and the Secret was out of curiosity of her own family. ...

A reader review on the goodreads.com internet website (referring to the 2012 Dorrance edition) states in part, “ This is a book that fellow geneologist will love. At least ones with a heavy Irish background and or some deep dark secrets. This feels like the story of my family. Polly Brown was born Irish. She was abandoned and made her way through life on her own. And of course their is the secret. Why families decide to have secrets is beyond me. It never works. Everybody always finds out (if it was ever truly a secret to begin with). It follows the next two generations as well: Molly and Alice. ...

Note on domestic postage/Australian destinations only

Australia Post introduced changes and new charges for domestic letter services, effective 31 March 2014, 4 January 2016 and, more recently, 3 January, 2020. Express lettermail charges last increased 3 October 2016 apparently are unchanged

I would expect to mail this by lettermail (using either an AP ‘TB1 Tough Bag Postpak’ or an AP ‘Domestic letter (Medium) with tracking’ envelope [both with inner cardboard/ card support]) as it will be less than 2cm in thickness.

Provided the total mass is not more than 500g and, given eBay’s (and now Paypal’s) insistence on tracking, the following charges apply

[1] routine mail using an AP ‘Domestic letter with tracking’ (Medium) envelope (includes inner packaging) – $5.50c

[2] registered mail using an AP ‘TB1 Tough Bag Postpak’ plus the registered post label – $8.45c
