TAA Junior Flyer badge

At least since the 1950s airlines, both national and international airlines in Australia, have given passengers free items as promotion of the airline as a 'friendly' carrier. In the early period the gifts were usually ephemeral items such as postcards or travel 'logs'- cards filled in by the aircraft Captain giving details of the flight.

In certain instances more substantial gifts, such as travel bags were given out. As the promotional aspect matured the airlines began to target children in their promotions by creating junior traveller 'clubs' whereby the child would receive, perhaps, a log book to be filled in for each flight taken and a badge signifying 'membership' of the 'club'; usually a set of wings in emulation of the pilot's wings.

The 'membership' was not secured by any fee and was not usually followed up by the airline post-flight. If a child was a frequent flyer and wore their badge on subsequent flights the flight attendant may have taken the child to the cockpit to be introduced to the pilots.

This flyers club continued until 1992, when TAA merged with Quantas
