"A General Atlas, containing Maps illustrating some important periods in Ancient History, and distinct Maps of the several Empires, Kingdoms, and States in the World, from original Drawings according to the latest Treaties, by J Wyld and engraved by N.R. Hewitt.   Edinburgh, printed for John Thomson & Co., for Baldwin, Craddock & Joy, London, & John Cumming, Dublin." A fine Georgian Atlas, first issued in 1819. This probably a first edition with 41 maps all present, as per the Contents. Also two comparative diagrams of the Worlds mountains and rivers, a 6-page "History of Geography," and an 18-page Index. In addition, 3 antique maps have been inserted by a previous owner: 1) A "Map of Persia and Caubul" by James Wyld, inserted opposite the atlas map of Persia.  2) "Hindustan from the Latest Authorities," a map "Engraved for the East India Register," inserted opposite the atlas map of India.  3) "A General map fo the East Indies, from the Latest Surveys, 1762." A map by Thomas Kitchin, inserted opposite  the atlas map of Australia. A most attractive atlas involving some important names in early 19th century cartography: James Wyld, John Thomson, etc. Each map is given a small vignette, and of course each map contains detailed information of the World as it then was. The Atlas is ahead of its time in calling New Holland "Australia" (it was approved by the British Government in 1824), though some of the coast is still marked in dotted lines, and the interior is still clearly unexplored. So too much of the southern part of Africa had yet to be surveyed, it being marked "Regions Unexplored". In Asia, the islands of Japan are given a strange shape on the map of China, though they are more accurate on the World maps. The United States of America are only those on the east of the country, given a separate map, plate 38. Plate 37 shows the whole of North America, with Indian tribes - 'Strong Bow Indians,' 'Snake Indians' and many others - shown in their areas. North Canada is simply described as 'Icy Sea.' The maps listed include separate maps for England and Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, 4 maps of the Ancient World, an Eastern and a Western hemisphere map, two maps for France, and two for Denmark (one including the rest of Scandinavia), and one of Prussia, in addition to the rest of Germany. Size: the covers measure 35.5cms x 27.5cms. Condition: Half leather original covers, with wear and loss of the leather at the corners. A little loss top/bottom of the spine, and wear along the hinges, but all holding. Original gilt titles present on spine. Wear to the marbled paper, and front label a little scuffed and marked. Inside, previous owner's book plate on free front endpaper. A bit of offsetting from the title page, and all pages a little browned, but generally in a good condition. Old annotation on the map of Africa. Overall a good copy in an original state. Free postage within the UK. £20.00 to Europe, £30.00 to USA etc. I have other antique maps, books, prints etc. in my ebay shop - please see my other items.
