FLIGHT & BARR
ROYAL WORCESTER
THISTLE COFFEE CUPS
As found
c.1795
Two Flight Barr Worcester
coffee cups (no saucers).
Part of a much more extensive
Georgian afternoon tea
and coffee set (see photos).
This listing these two coffee cups
that both have faults.
Both pieces have the Wrythen
fluted moulding design
(i.e. twisted ribbed design to body)
All pieces are decorated with the
same glorious cobalt blue bands
with hand applied pure gold leaf
design and the lovely gold thistles
that just gleam in the light.
Incised B mark underneath
which dates them to between
1792 – 1807
Very faint ‘B’ underneath each piece.
One has B+ underneath (no photo)
and hand painted number 3 in red.
The other has a hand painted gold
Number 7 which is what is on most
of the pieces in this group.
This tea and coffee set mainly dates to
the late 1700s or very early 1800s except
for six identical saucers (listed separately)
that have been added about 100 years later –
possibly to extend the setting so you could
serve tea and coffee together and they would
then have enough saucers.
Regrettably we have to split it all up
to sell as trying to pack so many fragile
pieces of porcelain to withstand being
sent through the post together would not
only be a nightmare but the cost to the
purchaser would be exorbitant.
If anyone in Australia is interested
in a large number of pieces or the
whole set we would be happy to
negotiate a more attractive purchase
price and help get a good Carrier to
deliver them when next going to your
area which should be cheaper and
safer than by post.
CONDITION
Both cups have a condition issue
hence the starting price.
A little wear to gold gilding on
top rims but the rest is all good.
The foot rim of the one with the
7 on the base has two chips,
I have photographed the biggest
one the other is tiny in comparison.
Still pings well when tapped.
The other one has a really tight,
short hairline on the outside only
(see photo) but it is so stable it still
pings really well when tapped.
A small patch of kiln grit showing
on the outside of the one with
the hairline which you should be
able to see in the photos.
Kiln grit is quite a common occurrence
in this English soft-paste porcelain
and pottery production in general
at this time and most of the teacups
and some of the other pieces in this
set have it to some degree.
Any little brown specks of colour
and/or unevenness to the foot rim
of any piece is all original and
how this soft-past porcelain
comes out of the kiln.
DIMENSIONS
One is a tiny bit bigger than the other-
6.3cm high and the other is 6.5cm high
Weight of both is 142 grams
