Large detailed antique copper engraved map of Portugal, by Johan Baptist Homann & Jean-Baptiste Nolin (1657-1708). 

This detailed map shows the sea coast from Cap. de Silleiro down to Cap. St. Vincent. There is great detail of the rivers in the region, roads, political boundaries, and hundreds of cities, including Lisbon and Porto. 

The decorative title cartouche features the royal coat of arms and the bountiful produce in the region. 

This beautiful map was published by Jean B. Nolin in 1736 and again republished by Homann in 1744 in Atlas Novus and by Homann Heirs in 1752 in Atlas Compendiarius.

Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was the most prolific map publisher of the 18th Century. He founded his company in 1702. In 1705, he became the Geograph of the Emperor Charles VI. In the same year, he was also Member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. They protected the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. 

In 1716 Homann published his "Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt" (Grand Atlas of all the World). Some maps were drawned with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder. Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann Heirs company, which was in business until 1848. 

J-B Nolin is named geographe for the King Philippe II, then engraver for the King Louis XIV. He realised several plans of the Chateau de Versailles. He worked with Coronelli, and created his own factory in Paris, rue St Jacques.

Condition :  good condition, on strong paper.
