About Black welo opals.

According to various reputable gemstone sources including GLA, in 2008, Welo opals were recently discovered in Welo province of Ethiopia. Ther fabulous beautiful colors are making them popular and expensive. The prices are getting to about the same price as Australian opals because of their intense colour and fire. Studies also show that though they have been on the market for just a few years, they have been proven to be stable, and like Australian opals are resistant to cracking and crazing.

Welo opals are very fascinating since Welo opals are hydrophane which means they are porous and absorb water, and other liquids. Because of this the welo opals will change color and may become clear and just about totally colourless when exposed to water. But once it dries out the brilliant intense colors will return. But generally i advice that my buyers just wipe them with a dry soft cloth to clean in lieu of putting it in liquid cleaner. As such i wear my welo opals as occassion jewelry not every day jewely and i do not wear them to swim, wash dishes etc.

Opal from the Wollo Province deposit was hailed as one of the most promising deposits of precious opal for the coming years in the Summer 2010 issue of Gems & Gemology and the Summer 2011 issue of InColor. ñWollo opal should be recognized as a new type because it can absorb or lose water, affecting transparency and play-of-color when wet, but recovering all its qualities when dry,î report researchers. They describe this new Ethiopian opal find as different from the opals of Shewa Province, which came into the market in 1993 but were prone to cracking. Unlike Shewa opal, Laboratory testing of the Ethopian Wollo opal revealed most specimens were resistant to crazing after repeatedly being immersed in water and dried out over a period of time. Not only are they stable, researchers say, theyÍre surprisingly tough and perfect for setting into opal jewelry. WHile Australian opals are formed in ancient seabeds, Ethiopian opals are formed due to the result of volcanic activity, with the stones forming in nodules within the volcanic ash. Volcanic opals are also known as hydrophane opals derived from the Greek word for water loving - because of their ability to absorb water. When wet, the stones become transparent and when dry they return to their opaque colour, with a vivid colour play that reminds me of the magical Northern Lights.

Smoke treatment :Even smoke treated welo opals are very stable. According to Williams. ñThe nature of hydrophane allows the smoke treatment to deeply penetrate the stone, yielding even body color.î In his stability tests, Williams found that the opal from Wollo that is ñwidely sold as nice crystal opal or black opal is also tough and stable enough to be treated with smoke and heat and not craze. After treatment, I dropped a smaller, round Wollo opal from seven feet onto a hard tile floor. Most opal, including Australian, would crack; even a diamond might cleave, but this thing bounced back without damage.

According to Gems & Gemology, ñWegel Tena or wello opals could sustain a fall from [over three feet] onto a concrete floor with no visible damage, even under the microscope. Repetition of the test on five oval cabochons did not produce any sign of damage.î When the same experiment was conducted with oval cabochons from the Mezezo deposit and Australia, including one boulder opal, all samples broke.
