Plate, 'Marathon runners', from 'The Grecian Series', Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Olympic Millennium Collection, porcelain, Wedgwood, England, 1999

A small white bone china commemorative wall plate with transfer-printed decoration in black on an orange-over-yellow sponged background in the centre and on the border. The centre features the Sydney 2000 Olympic logo circled by a wide band with a Greek key pattern.

A frieze of evenly spaced, 15 Greek male marathon runners, contained between thin black bands, decorates the border which is finished with a 22-carat gold line applied around the rim. Makers mark under base.

Designed at Wedgwood in 1996 using patterns adapted by the firm in the 1700s from ancient Greek Panathenaic amphorae. Design no 50112704407.

Made by Wedgwood in 1999.

Produced to celebrate the Sydney 2000 0lympic Games as official lincensed merchandise. Part of a limited edition of 2000 worldwide.

Made with clay from Homebush Bay Olympic site (where Stadium Australia stands) dug by Lord Wedgwood of Barlaston in 1996.
