Samurai were known for their incredible sword skills. The traditional samurai code of honour, discipline and morality known as bushido–or “the way of the warrior”– is still today the base for the basic code of conduct for much of Japanese society.
The Vikings fought using long swords and axes. A good sword was handed down from father to son, but Vikings also buried weapons with their owner when he died. Vikings did not wear much armour, though some chieftains wore mail coats. Most relied on a round wooden shield for protection. On their heads, they wore helmets made of leather or iron.
The Spartan army stood at the centre of the Spartan state, whose citizens were trained in the discipline and honor of the warrior society. Subject to military drill from early manhood, the Spartans were one of the most feared military forces in the Greek world. At the height of Sparta’s power – between the 6th and 4th centuries BC – it was commonly accepted that “one Spartan was worth several men of any other state.” The term “spartan” became synonymous with fearlessness, harsh and cruel life, endurance or simplicity by design. The Knights Templar were established at the time of the Crusades to protect the Christian pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land. Recognisable by a distinctive uniform – a white tunic with an eight-pointed blood-red cross, they pledged to die for their faith. They assumed greater military duties during the 12th century. Heavily armoured knights on their warhorses would charge at the enemy in an attempt to break opposition lines. They developed a reputation as fierce warriors, becoming a model and inspiration for other military orders.
This army, famed for its discipline, organisation, and innovation in both weapons and tactics, allowed Rome to build and defend a huge empire – which for centuries would dominate the Mediterranean world and beyond.
