The Sydney Herald (original, not a copy)

Monday, November 11, 1839

Published by Ward Stephens, Frederick Stokes, and William McGarvie, Sydney

In four broadsheet size pages - original and complete

Very good condition for the age - please see the photos. There are no stains.

The Sydney Herald was founded in 1831 by three employees of the defunct Sydney Gazette : Ward Stephens, Frederick Stokes, and William McGarvie.

The original four-page had a print run of 750. The newspaper began to publish daily in 1840, and the operation was purchased in 1841 by an Englishman named John Fairfax who renamed it The Sydney Morning Herald  in 1842.

This would look great framed and would make a wonderful and interesting gift.

There is nothing like old newspapers to help us gain a picture of colonial life in mid-19th century New South Wales, before the discovery and exploitation of gold. The whole life of the colony is displayed through:

  • Several rewards including those for stolen horses and absconders - 10 pounds in 1839 is about $A2,600 today so the rewards are pretty substantial
  • A reward regarding a mail highway robbery between Goulburn and Yass
  • Lists of steam ship arrivals and departures

  • Steam ship passenger fares

  • Auctions of their cargoes, from iron and building materials to furniture, books and stationery, linen and clothes, and foodstuffs, both from overseas and outlying areas of the colony. All listed in detail in the classified ads.

  • Property auctions and lettings

  • Business Announcements

  • Personals

  • Religious Announcements

  • Military Notices

  • Court Cases and Police Reports

  • Country News

  • International News

  • Servants Wanted

A wonderful piece of history that gives a real flavour of day to day life in the Sydney way back in 1839.
