RARE 1935
ROYAL DOULTON
CABINET PLATE
DEER IN WOODLAND
D5194
A striking series ware cabinet plate from
Royal Doulton.
This colourful rack plate features woodland
scene with a stag and two does in the
foreground under trees and a few
in the distance on the left.
This apparently is the only scene in this series
which was introduced in 1932 and withdrawn
during WWII.
I have found only one other version of this
pattern D5194 on the internet and it is more
naturalistic in its colours and hence
not as interesting as far as I’m concerned.
This is so dramatic with the solid bright yellow
background and the washed out grey/blue
trees which make the Stag and His Does
absolutely pop and take centre stage
of the design.
It’s a knockout.
Faint and slightly blurred blue printed
Royal Doulton mark with painted
series number D5194
Impressed date for April, 1935.
Rare and unusual find.
CONDITION
In very good vintage/antique condition
with few signs of age or use.
NO chips, cracks or repairs.
Mentioning only for complete accuracy
of condition report there are some VERY
minor age related surface marks but I
doubt this is from use, just from being
stored and handled over the years –
of little or no consequence.
There are a few long lines of glaze
crazing in the centre and on one
side of the outer flange which is
really only noticeable from the back
but it’s very minor in comparison
to how RD from this era can craze.
Still rings quite well when tapped so
it hasn’t affected the stability of the
plate or its visual appeal.
DIMENSIONS
It measures approximately:
26.5cm (10.4in) in diameter
It weighs: 580 grams
