Die Venus From Lespugue Figure Sculpture VEN02 - 20012. at Intelligenta The work - VENUS OF LESPUGUE (Original approx. 20,000-18,000 BC) This figure is a very successful replica from the museum collection, created by the artists of the Parastone Ateliers. After the Marquis de Vibraye in the 19th century In the 19th century, a prehistoric nude female statue was referred to as “Venus impudique” (unchaste Venus), a pun on the Roman “Venus Pudica”, the term “Venus figurines” has developed into a collective term for prehistoric female statues. The original meaning of the Venus figurines is unknown. Presumably their corpulence was intended to express wealth and fertility in the society of hunters and gatherers. The stylish, almost abstract female figure was carved from the tusk of a mammoth in the High Paleolithic. It was discovered in 1922 in the Rideaux cave near Lespugue (Haute-Garonne), at the foot of the Pyrenees. The figure, which was badly damaged during the excavation work, was later largely restored. Like many other Venus figures, the Venus of Lespugue has thin arms that lie over extremely large breasts. In contrast to the body characteristics, which were obviously given less emphasis, such as the face, arms and legs, the female sexual characteristics are particularly explicit and enlarged.
