Ugly coffee bag - beautiful coffee bean. Such a compelling contrast. Buy 1kg of 100% Arabica medium roasted whole coffee beans. Burundi Microlot range is an exciting new discovery from late 2012. We have now sourced coffees from the last 3 crop harvest and the new arrivals just keep getting better and better. This coffee is so exceptional, we have elevated the Burundi Microlots into our elite group of current Grand Cru selections. Similar to an Ethiopian Sidamo but with more complexity. Superb in either espresso, milk, filter or plunger - a very versatile coffee. Limited stocks. We are constantly in contact with our raw coffee broker to top up our large range of specialty coffees on a weekly basis. Often, we just say "tell us the best coffee you cupped in the last week" ? We have developed a great relationship so that I have high levels of trust in the broker's own palate. In this case, the samples were handed to me when the broker came to visit. As we had never tried a Burundi previously, the curiousity was overwhelming to the point I just had to tip these beans into the grinder asap and pull a shot on the espresso machine. What happened next was one of those memorable moments that makes working with coffee utterly delightful. In the cup, we tasted a brilliant treacle-flavoured sweetness. It reminded me of a classic washed Ethiopian Sidamo, but with more refined complexity - a hint of herbal tropical fruit that makes way to a rounded chocolate finish. We just had to grab a few bags and run this coffee in our high-end specialty cafes that feature Single Origin coffees. The response so far has been highly successful. Burundi is a very small, land-lock African country. The volume of coffee produced by Burundi is small compared to their African neighbors, however, the attention and care provided by the farmers to their crop is first-rate. Whilst all good things must come to an end, alas, the Mirango Microlot #1 has reached the end of our holdings but we have plenty of quality microlots inbound. What a sensational coffee we have enjoyed over the last 3 years - a complete surprise package and definitely under-rated. What is it exactly that made the Burundi special ? Flavor was high and acid balanced. There was a unique fruit to the cup that was not offensive or overly dominant - pleasing and refreshing. Burundi was the sort of coffee that left you wanting another cup immediately after finishing. It also worked extremely well black or with milk. The good news is we have two excellent replacements from microlots sourced out of the Muyinga estate. These microlots are roasted on a round-robin basis. Please kindly note, we do not take requests for a specific microlot - it's what's on hand and your order will be processed fast from fresh roasted coffee by our team. We do not hang onto roasted coffee for very long. Microlot #7 Cup Notes: Dark chocolate, malt and peach flavours up front. Rich creamy body through to a sweet caramel finish with a lingering stone fruit note. Score 83 points Microlot #5 Full cup with rich dark chocolate and walnuts. Delicate clean acidity. Linear profile through to a dark cocoa finish. Score 82 - 84 points (1BM) Roaster's Note Some seasons we are blessed with abundant quality in the coffees that come from Africa and other times it can be hard to pick a winner. It's all down to mother nature and how kind the seasonal growing conditions and harvest will develop the fruit. The 2015/16 crop was rather disappointing, lack-lustre, ordinary and just plain full of boring coffees coming out of Ethiopia, so our Burundi has been standing head and shoulder above just about any Sidamo, Limu and most Yirgacheffe's arriving into Australia. Big call, but that's our firm view. There is a simple reason our cafe customers constantly ask us to roast this bean - their customer's love it - especially in milk. The unique cup quality and character justifies this bean having earned it's place in our Grand Cru list.
