Accord or agreement. 2. Simultaneous combination of tones conventionally accepted as being in a state of repose. The Consonance range are blends of regions and varieties marked for an entry level (made to the way I like to treat my wines) price point. The Coates Consonance Red is in its sixth iteration, following releases in vintages 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and in 2012. Our aim with The Consonance Red is to provide a Syrah Cabernet Sauvignon blend that has a slightly Old World take on this classically Australian style. In recent years the refinement of red blends matured for long periods in oak, from producers such as Vega Sicilia and Quintarelli, have attracted my attention and the Consonance Red 2013 is my own amateurish experiment with this technique. Fruit for the blend is sourced from four different vineyards; two from Langhorne Creek, and two from McLaren Vale. The parcels are treated to natural yeast fermentation that proceeds for between 14 and 20 days. The longer time on skins provides colour and tannin structure without the use of added oenotannins. After pressing the individual parcels are transferred to wood after a short period in tank to settle out the heaviest of the yeast lees. A small percentage of Touriga Nacional pressings are combined into barrel to provide structure and complexity to the final blend. Our oak selection was 100% French barriques with 25% new (from the Remond and Marsannay cooperages in Burgundy). Once in oak the wine is kept on fine lees and given minimal handling apart from a single racking and regular SO2 checks. After 30 months maturation the tannins have attained a silky finesse whilst retaining good structure for future bottle ageing. The assemblage was completed prior to bottling unfined and unfiltered in November 2015. Final Production stands at 250 dozen. Tasting Notes Inky crimson red in colour. An intense aroma of vibrant forest fruits accompanied by perfume, cardamom and subtle herbal notes. Plush and softly textured on the palate with blueberry and cassis fruits intermingled with dark earth and mocha flavours. The persistent finish is supported by a refreshing acid backbone and soft, pliant tannins. Best 2016 to 2025. Technical Information Alcohol 14.0% by volume Residual sugar Total Acidity 6.9 g/L pH 3.50 Sulphur Dioxide 90 mg/L Total; 25 mg/L Free from the James Halliday Wine Companion Magazine (Feb/Mar 2014) (previous release) Coates The Consonance Red 2010 95 Points While the base of the wine is a 60/40% blend of syrah and cabernet sauvignon, a small percentage of touriga nacional, sangiovese and merlot pressings were added before the wine went into French barriques (30% new) for 28 months maturation; neither fined nor filtered. All this work has paid dividends, with a very complex medium-bodied wine, ranging far and wide across red and black fruits, spice, earth and cedar. Bargain, 14% alc.
