It appeals to all ages and levels of society, and the direction of its appeal has the most surprising number of variations. There are still those who think of model railways as no more than toy trains, and tend to refer rather disparagingly to 'Uncle's train set' in the loft. Yet the hobby has progressed a long way since the original concept of a train set. This was no more than an oval of interconnected rails on the bedroom carpet, with a tinplate clockwork (or later, electric) engine pulling a few coaches, which was hastily dismantled and tossed into the toy-cupboard at bedtime. The major change has been the transformation into a layout by the inclusion of realistic landscaping and model buildings to give a comprehensive display of an operating railway in a complete setting. The great variations in the hobby come from each individual's emphasis on the particular aspects that have the most appeal for him. There are those for whom the ideal is a perfect scale model of a section of an actual railway, often from the past, which not only looks exactly as the original, but is operated on a precise, if condensed, version of the real timetable. These perfectionists derive considerable pleasure from careful research and meticulous construction of the buildings, scenery, locomotives and rolling stock. Nostalgia often plays an important part, a not unreasonable yearning for the days of the steam train, which, viewed from the aspect of today's troubled times, seem to have possessed a quality of tranquillity, care and dependability long since obsolete. Then there are those who are simply fascinated by the world of models, and model trains in particular. The incredible degree of detail that present-day technology allows on scale models and the realism in the operation of moving parts is a source of wonder and continual pleasure. To these enthusiasts the importance of realism in railway liveries or the accuracy of timetables is secondary. On their layouts a German express locomotive pulling a set of GWR coaches may run happily beside a Canadian Pacific engine drawing a LNER train. There is the story of a man who observed that only one side of his train was visible as it ran round the continuous circuit in his loft. He therefore decided to paint the other side with a different livery, so that when run in the opposite direction an entirely different train could be seen! It seems then that model railways can be `all things to all men' - or women, for that matter - and this in itself makes the hobby unique. You may possess endless patience, you may be ham-fisted, you may only have a few precious hours a week to devote to your hobby; whatever your circumstances, you will find an area of this intriguing pastime that will accommodate you. And only you can decide the direction in which you want to develop your talents and interest. Convention need not influence this decision. Your satisfaction may derive more from the construction than from the operation of the completed system, in which case you will need to plan a long-term development. You may find that you have a flair for landscaping, or some hidden architectural talent may reveal itself in the buildings you design. Whatever you choose you can be sure that you have before you many years of relaxation and pleasure and the satisfaction of a well-chosen hobby. This book deals with the types of layout and the selection of a suitable location to accommodate the one chosen. Details are given of the methods of setting out and laying trackwork, and the installation of circuits for the control of trains, signals and lighting, including fully automatic control. Methods of constructing scenery, landscapes and buildings from raw materials as well as from kits are covered to suit varying degrees of dexterity. Rolling stock in various forms, including kits and ready-to-run models, is described in the final section; and the suppliers' list deals with sources from which some of the less readily available materials described in the text may be obtained.
